Leppings Lane. Again

The problem appears to be with stewards telling people to sit where they want, so people sit central and nobody else can get in who maybe even have those seats already filled.
Anybody familiar with Hillsborough knows it is obsolete. Nothing spent on it for decades.
I'm glad nobody seriously hurt.

I guess Sheffield Wednesday have pleaded poverty down the years

I'm sure I read somewhere a while ago that the year before the disaster they claimed to not have enough money for maintenance on that stand, but spent hundreds of thousands on players, when they were still considerable sums.

Years come and go and people get crushed and die, Bolton, Heysell, Hillsborough, Festival of Love, O2 arena and plenty of others around the world.

The risks of a crush are underestimated in my opinion.

Boro were lucky back in the day as a young lad I got crushed once against them barriers in the Holgate I learned a lesson to never stand in front of them again I wasn't the first or the last it happened to some of the crowds inside that stand back then had us all packed in like sardines

I vividly remember a crush waiting to get in the Holgate for fa cup game v Everton in 1988. Was 12 and didn't really appreciate the full danger but I can remember being crushed between two big guys and struggling to breathe for a short while. Far worse than anything I experienced inside the stadium although the Holgate itself was a scary place when over full. An absolute disgrace that it's still allowed to happen in this safety conscious age.

I remember two away games in particular when I was a kid that I look back now and wonder about.

Peterborough in the Cup 5th round, Big Jack’s team, from well before the kick off until ten minutes after the final whistle you could not move, forget about adjusting your position, aching legs or going to the toilet, just rammed like sardines for well over 2 hours, very dangerous but fortunately not a very large terrace so no ‘tumbling’.

Roker Park mid 70’s, we ended up wedged into the old clock paddock and I remember this Sunderland very old timer next to me complaining all match, including to the policemen, that he couldn’t breathe. Again, very dangerous.

Funny people mention the Holgate above, I remember my uncle saying that he wouldnt go to Ayresome again after getting injured stuck in front of a barrier in a big crowd.

The northern final second leg ZDS against villa was the worst I’ve been in but also one of the best…
Fine margins between a good time and people getting hurt…
We have no issues at the riverside but the large queues outside 5 mins before kick off shows there’s a possibility especially at big games for mad rushes…

Should take the safety certificate away from that lower tier until Wednesday sort out access. It’s surely not impossible to reconfigure or modernise to have an entrance for each block?

Yes, modernise the crowd control. I may be wrong but I thought there were still three gangways. This sounds like exactly the same situation as back in 1989, where the crowd wasn't controlled to make use of all gangways. There were many deaths and injuries in that central tunnel, and so it's an oversight that it wasn't given as much attention as the terraces when assessing the safety improvements.

Oh yes. I remember it well - and not for the right reasons!

Ended up in the crush on Clive Road trying to get into the Holgate. Somehow ended up next to a police horse.....then kneeling under it as the sheer weight of the people pushed me under the horse. Looked up. Massive horse **** slapped me in the face. Copper trying to get people to move out the way so I could get out from under his horse that wasn't appreciating a 19 year old pushing its appendage out of the way. A good 3-4 minutes I was under there - thankfully it didn't have a ****!

I'd like to happy days............

In all my decades supporting the Boro I can honestly say I haven't experienced anything quite like that!

The last time we were at Hillsborough we were channelled from the turnstiles up steps within a passage to our seats. It was very different to the 80s. But then again we have never filled the entire end.
