London Baby!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I really appreciate them and keep them coming!!!

Couple of other things

We are getting the train down so has anybody got any hotel recommendations and how many days/nights would you say is ideal to keep it interesting.

Or if we drive is there somewhere slightly outside from which it is easy to use public transport to get in to the City?

Hotel recommendations is a big of a "how long is a piece of string" question. What budget are you talking about to help narrow it down a bit ? You could literally spend a year in London and never get bored, so dont worry about that.

In terms of parking, you could do Stevenage (just off the A1) and get the train into Kings Cross in 20 minutes. Or park at Cockfosters and or High Barnet and get the tube into town.

Probably looking at £250/£300ish a night as a budget for 3 nights.

I get the you will never get bored, but I've got a 12 year old and 49 year old who have very different tastes and very different concepts about walking!!!

I'll be like an excitable frog jumping about everywhere, I've already been told just hanging around Trafalgar Square like I did in 97 is not an option!!!

Imperial War Museum, Natural History Museum, HMS Belfast are what I'd recommend for a 12 year old. Lords tour is supposed to be very good if he likes Cricket. We tend to drive in as we live in Kent and I have places to park through my job. If he likes Cars there's Ferrari and Bentley dealers in Berkeley Square and Rolls Royce and Porsche close by for some window shopping, there's usually a smattering of Supercars parked in the area too. We occasionally stay up for weekends but I've never found a mid-priced hotel that I've thought was good value.

For that budget, you'll be able to find something especially if you're sharing a room between the 3 of you. You then need to narrow down where you want to stay (the area) and you'll have a decent choice.

If you're not fussed about a particular area, then a few hotels I'd recommend off the top of my head are, Vintry & Mercer & The Ned (The City), Renaissance Kings Cross & The Standard (both Kings Cross), Nobu Portman Square (Marylebone), 100 Queens Gate (Kensington), The Landmark (Marylebone)

Depending on what he's in to there's also the Harry Potter Studio tour up in Watford or the Horrible Histories Boat Trip from Tower Bridge Quay. My boy is 11 and loved both of them.

Cheers Lizards I will have a look at these.

Must check out the iconic Battersea Power station which has been given millions of pounds of investments with shops, restaurants, a theatre etc and you can use the riverboat there for a Thames trip. It is so creative and amazing just to relax by the Thames.

It also now has its own underground station the northern line extension up to Kings Cross.

The other recommended favourites Covent garden and Camden markets are musts

Long story short we were meant be going to Kos on Friday but unfortunately my lad has tested positive for the you know what. He comes out of isolation on Saturday and has always wanted to go and see the bright lights of our wonderful capital.

He is 12 and footy mad (wife not so much), we are looking at 3 nights (luckily here in Nottinghamshire half term is 2 weeks so we are off next week).

Thoughts so far

Tour of Wembley
Madame Tussauds
Dungeons
Bus thing
Buck House
London Eye
Maybe a show
Somewhere nice to eat

Any advice that you seasoned travellers could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Just there with my 11 year old boy yesterday. Had a trip to the Science Museum (thoroughly recommend if he likes Science) and a Chinese set meal afterwards in the Golden Dragon, Chinatown, nice food.

I would second this. Madame Tussauds really isn't worth the queue and the cost. "Albertopolis" Near south Kensington station would be my first stop as well. NHM, V&A, Science museums and the albert hall and albert park and then you can walk into hyde park. Bear in mind that Wembley is a bit of a pig to get to and, unless you want to do outlet mall shopping, there isn't anything else near there. If you do insist on the waxworks then I would go to Sherlock Holmes place afterwards and head into regents park maybe? both are nearby.
The brother in law lives in South Kensington and when our lads were younger, we lived in the majority of the places you mentioned. Our visits also use to coincide with the Boro playing in London. ;)

Apologies for high-jacking the thread but my wife and I are down on Thursday night for the first time in a couple of years (flying visit before Friday AM Eurostar).

Has anyone tried Berber & Q before? Very tempted to head there for dinner before trying Mikkeller over the road for drinks. Otherwise, any recommendations for somewhere to eat in and around Exmouth Market?

Cheers!

I like Cafe Kick, which is just a little cafe / bar which used to be very popular with foreign football fans and showed games from across the world, although haven't been there for years now that most football can be beamed straight into peoples living rooms.

There's also Coin Laundry, Pizza Pilgrims and The Quality Chop House round there, all of which are decent.

I know this may be of no interest to you or your family but there is I notice an exhibition on in the Tate Modern of Rodin. His sculptures, the Kiss and the Thinker to name but two, are world renowned.
