London tips for kids

Taking the kids to London this week(both under 6).

What have your kids loved doing when you have taken them?

Thanks in advance,

💋

Sorry. I keep adding to this. I do this a lot.

London Zoo is great ( even though it’s a Zoo) for a morning, short walk to Camden Market along the canal after, street food lunch. Or do that in reverse starting off with a canal boat trip from Little Venice, to Camden.

Hamleys too, then walk down to Piccadilly Circus, through to Trafalger Square, Downing St and Westminster, ending at Big Ben and the river.

Natural History Museum is great.

Hard Rock Cafe at Piccadilly is expensive, and you need to book, but a treat for kids.

Hop on and off tourist bus, is good for orientation, if you’re not that familiar with town.

Go see a show. Loads to choose from. The Goes Wrong people have shows good for kids. Depends on their age.

It will be expensive, but don’t keep count it will lessen the experience.

london is a big old place, and its easy to rack up a lot of miles walking around, even on the tube etc. be wary of trying to do too much, and having weary & grumpy kids. pick a few good places to go, don't try and do too much. take double decker busses to see the sights, and have a rest.

plenty of good viewing places like this

yes, I am a lazy b***r.

Tower of London.
We stayed quite close and changed from DLR to underground there, unless I'm mistaken. There's a small playground directly outside the station that our kids enjoyed when we passed. Handy for a little break. You could but slices of pizza etc from a little deli-type shop there.

Mine have enjoyed the Tower, a ride on the riverboats between Westminster and Greenwich, the museums in Kensington, ice creams by the river at Embankment, visiting the Lego store in Leicester Square.

But if your kids are more cultured than mine they may prefer tea at Fortnums and retiring to their club in St James.

.... depends on the kids of course ....

Maybe river trip to Greenwich (tourist boats from Embankment Pier, or you can take the regular service 'Uber' boats). Most kids seem to like this as a different thing to do. Short enough (40 mins) not to be too boring for them. Take the DLR back. A bit of a toytown train for kids. Grab the front seat (no drivers on DLR trains) and the kids can pretend to drive it on the way back.

In Greenwich, the Maritime Museum is very child friendly, and free. Lots of regular exhibits are interactive and there is usually additional stuff put on for kids. Around the back of the museum in the park itself is a regular kids play area. Not THE reason to travel to Greenwich, but the kids might need to burn off some energy.

If you want a decent pizza in a child friendly pub during the day, try the Pelton Arms (10 mins walk from the kids play area). The added attraction for you is that it is a real pub, with decent beers etc. If that's yr end point, walk back along the river from here to the DLR.

The Cutty Sark is pretty expensive. I am not sure if that is good value for very young kids. The Observatory at the top of the hill (great place to take pics etc) is also pricey now. The main exhibit is a bit heavy for very young kids, but there is a planetarium. They may sell tickets just for that.

This is all a full day. Hopefully they will be knackered by the end of it.

That little playground next to Tower Hill/Tower Gateway was out of action a few weeks ago when I walked past.

Transport museum

Hamleys

Harrods

Tower of London

London eye

HMS Belfast

Hyde Park

Depends what they are into really but that list was for my lads on their last two visits

Book the wonderlab in the science museum. Just been Thursday. Kids will love it
Woah now. Not just kids loving it 🙂. It’s brilliant (and there is a smaller good one closer to home at the NRM in York now).

Hugely agree about the maritime museum too. Did that in Feb.

We did Pizza Union off the train near King’s Cross. Good value and my 5YO wolfed down the pizza and he can be fussy eating out sometimes.
