Looks like the Ashes will go ahead

I think any players who don’t fancy it should be warned that they could be putting their chances of future selection at risk.

Take players who are committed to playing for England. This may mean some new selections, a chance to try out some talent with a partly developmental squad.

I really don’t fancy our chances over there anyway, especially with some of the likely absences.

As much as i love the Ashes no player should be pressurised to go. it won’t be fun, the Aussies will rub our noses in It with a weakened Squad.

So players probably feel a duty to travel, I would completely accept the tour not going ahead and they have every right to choose not to go. It is their job to play cricket, but not to tour in the strict bubbles over two months.

Yes, they should feel a duty to travel.

In my view professional sports men should be prepared to walk over metaphorical hot coals to represent their country.

Crying off over having to spend a few weeks in a luxury hotel with their team mates would be quite pathetic in my opinion.

Pulling out of a tour because we would be likely to lose would be utterly shameful.

Representing your country is a rare privilege.

Couldn’t be less interested in watching an Ashes in such circumstances. Send them over by all means but they will be lambs to the slaughter and won’t be pleasant viewing.

Lambs to the slaughter every time they go. No change there.

Well except for 2010-11 when you stuffed them.
We did, it was great watching them get skittled for 98 on boxing day. I was hoping it would be postponed for a year so I could go over and watch it, I was going to adalade. Get the flipping vaccine kiwis!

I'm slightly gutted. It proper wrecks my sleep pattern as I usually end up getting up 2-3 hours before work to watch it😂. I always say I won't bother then usually end up getting up.

I remember once turning it on and seeing Siddle get 3 in 3.... I thought it was highlights lol

Im not as 'bothered' this year. I don't it's the same but hopefully get more into it nearer the time. We could be T20 WC winners by then (although different squad).

I doubt we can find 2-3 decent top order batsman by November. I think it will be like the last Ashes at home. Scores of around 200-300. I don't think either can particularly bat (stand fast Root and Smith). It's going to be dominated by the ball. Hopefully Wood stays fit with no Archer.

I think your first statement is callous and selfish, you wanting to watch a stronger England team should not trump the rights of the players to a family life. Clearly you or your partner have never worked away from your family.
An example, my other half works away quite abit it’s the nature of her job, usually she may be away a couple of months maybe once or twice a year however, because most of last year was cancelled she’s been away on and off since the end of last year for a couple of months at a time. Coming back for a week or two then away again. In that time shes missed our babies first crawl, first walk and first words. That does a lot of emotional damage to an individual and it’s not really fair on the kids either.

People forget it's what they do for a living.
Not sure how they'd sit with the payments from their central Contracts if they unlimately refuse to go for whatever reason.
Why should they be paid for sitting at home when someone else goes and gets paid for the work.
And yes, I've spent almost my entire career away from home, including overseas, so I'm well aware of the sacrifices they'll be making. The difference being I didn't get paid vast sums for playing a game.
Simple. No play no pay.

Exception to the rule sadly.

Discounting that series we’ve won one and drawn one of the 20 Tests since the turn of the century- losing the other 18. Including 2 whitewashes.

Think we'll do OK with the ball. But batting is another story.
Only Root is in the top ten rankings. The Aussies have 3 in there.
Bairstow or Butler need to find some good form.
Could be a long tour.

Im not saying they should be paid, if they choose not to go they shouldnt be, just that with all the bubbles issues it should be optional, but if they choose to sit it out they shouldnt be punished further down the line.

They will likely lose and probably heavily; more to do with our frailty than Aussie strength- they are not all that.
Anderson is not a threat out there and Broad is brittle, so the absence of Archer is a problem, meaning Wood has to stay fit and Robinson has to march on.
If we had Archer, Wood, Robinson and Woakes, backed by Stokes and could keep them fit for a couple of months, I think we would do them out there, even with an obvious weakness as spinner.

Root, Malan and Stokes could all have got big runs out there and Bairstow and Buttler could also weigh in.
Burns, Crawley, Pope and Lawrence are lightweights, but young Hameed could well be a major thorn in Aussie sides.

I think a full squad, fit would do well.
Without Stokes and Archer it will be a bridge too far.

Players rightly have the choice of whether to go or not, but with that choice there should be consequence.
If centrally contracted you should go, or forfeit the contract, it is as simple as that.

Personally speaking, if you wont tour Australia for The Ashes if selected, then just what is the point?
