Marten de Roon

Played the defensive midfield role from the number 10 position for us. We never really gave him a go in his natural position. We were a bit of a mess weren't we?
Speaks volumes at how negative our play was: holding midfield player starting in #10 position..

I must have been watching a different De Roon when he played for us.

People have always said he was a good player for us, i don't buy that personally, i was always massively underwhelmed by him.

Reason why......well, we obviously signed him as a defensive midfielder/"destroyer", and he quite simply wasn't doing the job well enough - hence why we pushed him further forward and reverted back to the clayton/leadbitter partnership.

Don't get me wrong, he scored some memorable goals (sunderland at home and city away) for us, but i don't think he was that great for us by any stretch.

Clearly a good player in general though.

This is the supposed line up of the only Championship game he played for us in 2017-2018, according to the BBC.

That team would be more useful if it was upside down.
Yep Wolves away? but 4-3-3 which makes more sense - Long trip there and back very hungover from a work night out! No idea why we signed 3 strikers when we also had Gestede and Bamford. (Gestede was naff but was better than spunking 7m on Fletcher too)

Howson, De Roon Clayton
Braithwaite, Fletcher, Britt

It was obvious that he was a good player when he was here, very mobile and athletic and could play a bit too.

I get why we used him further forward, given how much he influenced games for us, verses out other midfielders.

Of all of business that summer he was probably the best.

We wasn’t a defensive midfielder he was a proper box to box player who did abit of everything. He was brought in to replace leadbitter not Clayton. It wasn’t his fault Clayton couldn’t handle the step up to the premier league.

Not quite sure about that, he was very commonly known as a defensive midfielder before we signed him. We needed a more "mobile" version of clayton. Just take a look at his goal record too - before we signed him. Leadbitter was a goal-scoring midfielder. De Roon was for from that.

"De Roon is nicknamed The Wavebreaker in Italy for his ability to break up attacks, and has similar traits to George Boateng - another defensive Dutch midfielder who was beloved during his time on Teesside - according to Krabbendam."

"Holding midfielders N’Golo Kante and Jan Kirchhoff were both incredibly influential for their respective clubs as Premier League newcomers last season, and Middlesbrough’s Marten de Roon has the potential to emulate their instant success in the same role in 2016/17."

Hate to sound pedantic but we definitely signed him for a holding role.

We were playing 4231 but we were getting over-run in midfield so dropped the 10 and added an extra CM to play a 433. Clayton, De Roon (and Forshaw more than Leadbitter) was our midfield and De Roon played the furthest forward of the 3.
