MICHAEL CARRICK is hoping to include fellow Geordie Adam Sadler as part of his coaching team at Middlesbrough.

Carrick is set to be confirmed as Boro’s new head coach in the next couple of days, despite having not been at the Riverside on Saturday as the Teessiders were held to a goalless draw by the Championship’s bottom club, Huddersfield Town.

Leo Percovich admitted after the game that he was awaiting guidance about what happens next, and while the Uruguayan has mapped out a training schedule for the rest of this week, he is not expected to remain in charge for Saturday’s game at Preston.

Carrick’s appointment should have been rubber-stamped by the time Boro head to Deepdale, although the ongoing delay in confirming the former England international’s move to Teesside has largely been the result of issues over the assembly of his backroom staff.

Working alongside Carrick, the Boro hierarchy have considered a number of different options, with Sadler having emerged as a leading contender to be part of the new team.

The North Shields-born 42-year-old is currently employed as part of Brendan Rodgers’ backroom team at Leicester, having begun his coaching career with Newcastle United at the age of just 21.

He was reserve-team boss with the Magpies, before following Glenn Roeder to Norwich City, a spell that preceded a period as first-team coach at Plymouth Argyle, working under Peter Reid.

Sadler has also led Manchester City’s Under-18s, coached at Ukrainian club Tavriya Simferopol and currently combines his duties with Leicester with an international coaching role as part of the backroom set-up with Northern Ireland.

Carrick is keen to surround himself with some experienced coaching figures as he prepares to take on his first role as a head coach in his own right.
He was a senior member of the coaching staff at Manchester United under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and was caretaker boss of the club for three matches following Solskjaer’s departure last November.

If he's dead serious about taking the job, why wasn't he at the game on Saturday?

I'm not suggesting it signifies that he's not coming. I just would have thought he would have been there if it was as close to being 'tied up' as is being reported.

By all accounts we have been sorting backroom staff and he’s preferred to stay away and watch the games on video. Have no problem with it myself. Feels like the announcement is coming to me

Maybe he didn’t want the hype speculation to detract from Leo. It’s not uncommon rest assured he’ll have watched it.

It’s good he’s bringing in who he wants and they have experience.

A bit of bio from wiki:

Coaching career

At the age of 21, Sadler entered coaching, joining Newcastle United in 2001. During his time at the club, Sadler was appointed reserve team manager, helping the side to win the Northumberland Senior Cup. A short spell at Norwich City under Glenn Roeder was followed by a return to North East England, where he was assistant manager at Blyth Spartans, Team Northumbria and Gateshead. Sadler later joined Plymouth Argyle, eventually becoming first team coach under manager Peter Reid.[4] In August 2011, Sadler joined Manchester City as under-18 coach.[5] Following two years at Manchester City, Sadler took up a coaching role at Ukrainian club Tavriya Simferopol.[2]

In 2014, Sadler joined Leicester City as a tactical analyst under Nigel Pearson. In 2018, under the management of Claude Puel, Sadler was appointed as first-team coach.[2] On 26 February 2019, following the sacking of Puel, Sadler and joint-caretaker manager Mike Stowell oversaw a 2–1 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion.[6]

On 28 August 2021, Sadler joined the backroom staff of the Northern Ireland national team, in conjunction with his coaching role at Leicester City.[7]

How many assistants is he going to have? Will he use any of the staff that is already here?
The metro is reporting Phelan will be his assistant. He's still on the Man Utd payroll apparently, despite not actively working for them. Assume Leo and Fettis will be part of the team, and probably this lad Sadler. Maybe Grant too, or he might stick with the u21's or u18's.

you reckon the hold up is with Sadler then? He seems to have been a fairly new addition..

I don't think Grant has completed his A license yet, so he can't coach with the first team yet
