Michael Carrick post match interview Vs Ipswich

At the end of the season we are going to be over 10 points short of the playoffs despite this 9 game unbeaten run. That’s about right for where we have been as a football club this season.

I agree with some of what you are saying, but I've been looking back through the complete word-for-word transcripts which I take of every media conference, and at any one time between Christmas and the beginning of March Carrick himself made the point, on many occasions: he didn't believe in "chopping and changing" a stable side, but that bringing back players too soon and expecting them to perform could lead to increased risk or injury recurring. He added that it was unavoidable to avoid putting square pegs in round holes on occasions, because his choices were so limited during some games during that period. One example was with Haydn Hackney and Dan Barlaser. Don't forget the International breaks where players landed back late in the week before a Saturday game, with no training or assessment, and couldn't go back straight into the team. Carrick said recently that Management is a learning curve like any other job, but in his case, he's had a number of big obstacles to overcome in his first full year as a Manager: not the least, having up to ten of your regular players out injured at any one time. He deserves great credit for getting us this far, and we should be proud of that and confident looking forward.
There's no doubt Carrick has had a lot of problems to deal with this season and he's done well. I don't think there's many other managers who could he done better with the hand he's been dealt this season when you take the season as a whole. I'm fully behind him as our manager. That doesn't absolve him from criticism though.

That particular scenario you are talking about with Hackney/Barlaser was avoidable. He could have went 3 at the back. Many posters on here wanted it at the time and he eventually switched to that formation after Sunderland, Bristol, Plymouth and Stoke performances. We immediately looked better. He also could have switch Dieng in for Glover earlier than he did. We also could have played a bit more direct instead of over playing in our own half game after game when it clearly wasn't working. It took too long to try something different. Carrick did cost us points in that period. That doesn't make him a bad manager.

I think too many of our fans were too quick to write off our play-off chances this season. Fans were saying it was over in February, after we'd lost to Bristol City and Preston.

I know it's looking almost certain now that we won't make the play-offs, but I felt writing off the play-offs when we still had so many points to play for was the wrong attitude, and remember thinking I hope Carrick and the players don't have the same attitude.

The team has definitely given it a good go in the end but I guess it was too little too late. If only Lath had have returned from injury a month earlier.
I don't think so. We've done incredibly well to maneuver ourselves into a position where the play offs were even a possibility. Realistically reaching the play offs from the position we were in around January/February time would've required something very very special and with our injuries/squad disruption i don't think it was ever realistically feasible.

we have had to many average players on the pitch at once along with players not fully fit. form was terrible. the tactics carrick tries to play are for good sides. this playing out from deep is not something a championship team like us should be relying on. carrick has cost us the play offs imo.

if he identified sooner and went back to basics, like we did at the start of this good run. we would have stopped the silly goals we concede and have more points on the board.

playing out from deep when we have barlaser greenwood clarke dieng engel thomas ayling etc is suicide man. they are all to slow. we can get away with is somewhat if there is only dieng and clarke as bad options to pass to but when its half the team its a joke. we were giving teams free chances several times a game. but it took carrick months to address.

as soon as we start to do it again we concede from it again, like hull. he needs to drop it, its horrible we all hate it and its costing us more points than anything else.
Couldn't disagree more with this. There's no doubt we need to get better at it and probably become a little more pragmatic in how we approach it, but it's a fundamental of the way we play when in possession.
