Michael Carrick's VAR point after Middlesbrough penalty decision [Gazette]

We are pretty bad at set-pieces generally, don't score many & let in quite a few. Definitely something to improve but I think we've been saying that for a few years now.

The reason why we struggle at set peices is probably why we get so many goals in open play though, so it's a balnce. Smaller players with good technique and mobility, vs bigger players/battlers who are good with their heads.

This and there's only so many hours on the training ground. It seems clear that Carrick has focused on open play and possession since he came in. It's why we're so good at it. They've had 100's of hours practicing it in training. To drill us better at set pieces will require reducing the amount of time we spend on other things.

Interesting Q.
I don't think it would as IMO there was minimal contact between Steffan's knee & the strikers foot.
VAR would've said the ref didn't make a “clear and obvious error” so their decision would be confirmed.
I still can't see this contact !

If there had been VAR and the ref hadn't given the penalty initially I wonder if he would have been asked to have another look at it.

Probably overthinking things now!!

Minimal at best but I don't see enough separation between them for VAR to be able to say there was no contact so the decision to award the penalty was a 'clear & obvious error'.

Ah yes, because a freeze frame of two players touching in a contact sport proves it was a foul.🙄
The ref gave a foul because he was conned by Morris diving. It was a clear and obvious error as pretty much everyone who doesn't work for Luton Town FC agrees.

We are talking about whether VAR would overturn the referee's decision. Based on how it is used in the Prem, I don't think the video shows the referee made a clear & obvious error so his decision of penalty would stand.
Similarly if he hadn't given a pen, I don't think VAR would've overturned that either.

VAR does not always work on clear and obvious errors though, the ref can ask VAR to review a decision too if he has sufficient doubt (usually when players are in their ears).

Yesterdays penalty decision was far from clear, in fact it was so far from obvious I suspect he would not have given it at all, and relied on VAR to correct him had VAR been available. I think Carrick has a valid concern as without it this ref seems to have guessed at best, or assumed rather than being certain, and if so, he should have erred on no penalty as he presumably did for the Jones claim.

No consistency in the game, total lack of integrity. On the clear and obvious situation refs and VAR officials look after their own as far as they can (see Brighton v Spurs not long ago)

What happened to having defenders on goal line near to posts??, last 2 goals against may not have been scored, including last nights.
