Middlesbrough Stench

Getting off the train at Middlesbrough in the 70s and 80s there was always the acrid smell from industrial processing of various kinds, including gas, burnt copper, sulphur, etc, especially if the wind was coming in off the North Sea.

It actually was a "welcome home" feeling when I was at the Poly

Newton Aycliffe is the worst now. If you drive north up the A1 as you pass Junc59 the stench is absolutely gut churning, its so bad that the stink spreads as far as northern Darlington 3 miles away it's from the "recycling centre" at Ashcourt Quarry

I thought this was going to be thread about adopting a US style franchise nickname.

The idea of "the Middlesbrough Stench" is growing on me.

When I liked in York, there was a large sugar beet factory, and when the smell from that was wafting over the city, that was worse than anything I've found on Teesside. Not particularly noxious, but so sticky and cloying it felt like you were breathing candyfloss.
