Millwall to expand the Den

To be fair in our eyes Boro are probably the greatest team the world has ever seen ( by far) but I'm not sure that the people who suggested the 60k stadium had us in mind as the opposition on cold midweek night that they might be at some point be getting 60k in . But as it's the 2 nd city they could be hoping to get a whole raft of touring musical names to play there in the summer, and if the FA ever start thinking of fans again they might play one of the FA cup semis there as well on one of the lesser finals of a European trophy. Then there is American football and so on.Im sure Brum with a spanking new stadium and a bit of movement up the leagues could get at least get 30-40,000 crowds, or at least until the novelty has worn off.
Yes, maybe as a second city stadium for other events, but certainly not required for Birmingham city (whoever the opposition 😃).

There's hardly a shortage of people in either London or Birmingham to fill stadia. As long as the product and price is right I wouldn't be surprised to see either stadium full.

Birmingham City owners need to keep their eyes on the ball and not getting ahead of themselves - something they have paid dearly for this season.
That City already has one major stadia that used to host FA Cup semi finals. It has a newly revamped athletics stadium that was an excellent facility for the Commonwealth Games as was the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) an all year round venue for major touring bands, sports and conferences - Birmingham City wouldn't be able to compete with any of these facilities.

I might well be incorrect but I seem to remember people saying Boro would never fill the Riverside when that was being built.
With a historical average of 20k it wasn't overly ambitious to build a 30k stadium.
It was increased to almost 35k, but has since shrunk to below 32k.
The clubs mentioned above are looking at capacities of 3 times their historical averages.

If they build the stadium then it trumps what you have suggested are the alternatives already in place, there isn't much sentiment when it comes to money. The FA if they have to.place the semis elsewhere will look at the potential revenue of the stadiums on offer. Same for large touring bands, if they can go to Villa( 50,000 in the future) or City (60,000) then they will likely go for the biggest one.

The incremental cost of building a large stadium v small is insignificant in the scheme of things.
It’s not all about footy - options for events.

I think we’ve filled the Riverside less than half a dozen times - that includes our glory years.

Good luck to them

We've had capacity crowds half a dozen times in the last couple of years.
( Bear in mind, a sellout can mean around 32k).

We had a season ticket waiting list at one point which is why we added the corners. We have had waaaay more than half a dozen sell outs.

Fair enough - hold me hands up happilly

My point really is - all this ‘who has got the biggest willy’ nonsense in football?

Best fans…… most ST holders….best away fans…. best proper fans….plastic fans….
just a bit of nonsense for me.

I am bit surprised Millwall going for a 34k stadium - their fanbase is much smaller than West Ham, however S/E London has only three fully professional teams - Charlton, Palace and Millwall, with Bromley and Sutton in the National League Premier. There are scattered Millwall fans all over SE London, but they seem to be more concentrated in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, New Cross, Peckham, Deptford amongst the traditional working class white communities. Chelsea have a lot of support south of the River as Lambeth was a big fan base for them say before 1939, many families working class families from that are of London were moved when public housing was expanded.

Like the Boro - Milllwall is in an unfashionable area for London where immigrants had moved from say Scotland in their case had moved for work, like Irish to Middlesbrough pre 1900. Millwall has gentrified a bit more than Middlesbrough.

I would have thought 25k capacity would fulfil them as a Championship Club. maybe they think they can realistically be mid table Premier League.

The plates have shifted in recent years.

London is awash with money and millions of people.

I can see half the premier league being made up of London clubs in the very near future with others in the south east zone like Ipswich, Southampton, Brighton making up most of the rest of the places.

It is getting harder and harder for the traditional northern clubs to compete.
