Motorhome holiday

Thinking of booking a motorhome hire, for a week, to do a bit of touring. Just for two of us.

Any advice or recommendations?

Probably touring Scotland - we’ve not been past Edinburgh to date…

I would have prefered a vehicle with an automatic gearbox, but they seem rare…

A couple of years ago we did the Great North 500 holiday in a Motorhome and had a great time. I used this company who we have used for Glastonbury. Its a kiwi firm and they are fabulous and we picked up or vehicle from their Edinburgh depot near the Airport.

HarryVegas is out Motorhome expert, give him a shout.

Edit: I am sure he's just returned from spending the New Year in Scotland.

It's a good idea to hire the van from somewhere like Edinburgh/Glasgow as it will save you time lost in the van. I'm looking at spending some time up in Scotland in my van this year. The only word of caution is that the North Coast 500 can be like a procession of motorhomes and campervans (particularly through July and August) and it's quite a drive from Edinburgh to even get to the start! I'm looking to do some island hopping in the Hebrides particularly a pilgrimage to the home of Stornoway Black Pudding on Harris!

Keep meaning to try this, but not seen it to buy in the shops I buy food. I see that they list Darlo as somewhere it is sold but don't mention which shop/butcher's.

Just make sure you get unlimited mileage in with the hire. I have a VW T5 and we have done the West coast area a couple of times, they are plenty pf sites dotted around however with a camper you will have book in advance. Check out:

Yes we went out of season so didn’t need to book (Sept) but June July August you do have to book in advance. Sites are excellent with really good facilities.

From recent trips I’d recommend the Trossachs, mini Lake District without the crowds, Stirling, and the Fife peninsula.

The Kelpies near Falkirk is a nice stopping point depending on your route. We have done West Coast then across the Inverness and down the A9 onto the A1 and home.

If you're not fixed on Scotland then Europe is fantastically set up for Motorhomes, many small towns and villages deliberately set up free or very cheap places to stay to encourage tourists. While you won't get far in a week, you could do the Pas de Calais/Nord and some of Belgium. Tournai is a gem of a town, as is Montreuil-sur-Mer and Esquelbecq, Wissant and Cassel are good motorhome stops close to the ports. Ypres isn't free, but also worth a visit and the last post plays every evening at the Menin Gate.

I absolutely love Belgium and Ypres in particular. This years trip is a try out for a big European expedition. I plan to retire in three years from now and hope to take a year out touring Europe.
Bit of a pipe dream, but we all need one…

We did the nc500 with a motorhome from here

http://www.motorhomekings.com/

Think we paid about £450 for 4 nights and it ended up getting upgraded as someone crashed the one we had hired so we had a huge one

Had a great time apart form emptying the crapper every day

Only down side is the time you have to return it - check the terms and maybe factor it as an extra day. We had to do a 3:30am scarper from our campsite and they had rules against leaving in the night 😂

I bought my Moho 6 years ago when mortgage finished, never looked back. Only done Scotland once, went as far up the west coast as Bunree, near Fort William and then across the middle via Aberfeldy (distillery) to Stonehaven and back down the east coast.
Been over to France and Belgium 3/4 times now, camping jeugstadion is 10 mins walk from the Menin gate and reasonably priced.

Better make that 90 days out, unless you have EU passports.

I hadn't thought of that. Might have to include a trip outside of the EU, to break it up... Not sure how all that works...
The rule is a maximum of 90 days in 180. So 90 days there and then 90 away.
