Nathan Jones doing a fantastic job at Luton

I'm not sure how much of a shoestring it is, I mean they offered Mpanzu more in wages than we could. Clearly still in the bottom half for spending, and yes hell of a job by him
Luton have second-smallest budget in the division apparently, one place above Blackpool.

I agree with BM they will still be paying £15k/week salaries. Players will leave after 1 to 2 years if they pay say 75% of the going rate. This is Luton's fourth season in the Championship?

I agree Nathan Jones is doing a great job @ Luton. But as said football can be a strange game he failed totally at Stoke with more resources.

It doesn’t really matter what they’re paying if 22 teams are paying more then they are.

Viv - the squad total figures will not be much different for the clubs without parachute payments. Players are normally acute aware of who getting what thats why they use agents who represent a group players and agents I am sure talk amongst themselves. Players at Luton will be getting similar to Boro players.

Some clubs will also keep their costs down by not running academies. Clubs close to London can pick up players more easily from other clubs etc and need the academies less.

I'm not sure 22 are paying more than Luton anymore, that figure isn't from this season, and maybe not last. They signed Luke Freeman this year he'll be well paid, Watson and Morris were signed and they were championship players on championship wages last season. As RedWurzel says some of their footballing costs will be quite low like academy, so that allows them to put more into wages.

Last season it was Snodgrass, Woodrow and Doughty all brought in and all will have been earning good money.

I'd also suspect Wigan and Rotherham will have smaller budgets. They'll be creeping up that table of footballing expenditure.

Absolutely no doubt that they're right up there with value for money spent though and managerial success

The so called smaller clubs are doing really well in the championship this year - off the top of my head, Blackburn, Luton, QPR, Bristol City, Millwall, Swansea, and to a lesser extent, teams like Wigan, Reading, Birmingham, Blackpool, Rotherham are doing well (I bet all these teams have budgets much lower than Boro). Along with West Brom, we must be the greatest underachievers so far this season. It's an absolute mess atm!

“Just to underline what a phenomenal achievement
@LutonTown
getting to the play-offs is, this is the wage comparison from the most recent accounts (March/April this year) of the 4 clubs involved. Luton £12.5m, Huddersfield £21.6m, Forest £31.9m, Sheff Utd (as PL club) £42.9m.”

I think he obviously is a good fit for Luton, but he also must have something about him to be getting the very best out of players that the likes of us would probably be turning our noses up at. It also shows you can be competitive in this league on a relatively low budget if you have the right set up in place
