Nathan Wood

Goodluck to him but I don't think he's done that well at Swansea boro destroyed him in both games this season. He is good ball playing centre back and tall good header but positional play is where he needs to improve

We could have played him instead of bringing in Lenihan or Clarke. We spent £2.5M on Clarke yet gave Wood away.

Lenihan has been an absolutely outstanding free signing.
I'd sooner have him in the side.

Clarke's been an excellent CB in every season at this level.

He was a good signing who got a freak injury that might well have ended his career

That's the problem with trying to develop players long-term in the Championship. You can understand Wilder going for experience rather than gambling on youth as he knows if he didn't get results he would be out. Hackney only got a chance because Leo had nothing to lose.

Why sign players that you don't need though? That £2.5M could have been spent elsewhere. Fine with Lenihan coming in but it's a shame Wood isn't part of our setup. Fry, Lenihan, Wood, mcNair would have been a good four.

Happens too often. Players replacing players who are no better yet we pay a fee but give the other one away. See Pears, Forshaw, Adomah, Stuani. Remember as well Lenihan was brought in to replace Fry as central CB.

I think he looked a mile off the standard for us he was incredibly slow which is something you cant fix as a player.

I know that fee was quoted, or somewhere near, but I'd be shocked if the true fee was anywhere near that.

Fee's are so complex these days and some continental clubs even include salaries as the overall 'fee'.

He was never given a run of games. We will never know how good he would have been for us. Bottom line is he's played every week for an average Swansea side so proved he is a championship player. So could he have done a job for us? Probably.

Don't forget under Warnock and Wilder we regularly utilised full backs in our back three.

He’s obviously having a great season at Swansea. Martin always speaks well of him and has forced his way into the u21s. He’s played nearly every game. He would never have got the opportunity to do this at Boro and improve on the job. As others have said above, let’s hope we have a big sell on clause. City seem to have the right idea with their outgoing transfers for young players - decent fee with both a buyback and sell on clause. I guess they have the power to do this.

And there is the problem. Too many managers appointed who wouldn't give opportunities to identified special talent. Woodgate was talking Wood up from the time of Tony Pulis yet until Carrick (except during Woodgate's brief reign) youngsters were only played if they were desperate and if they didn't hit the ground running (like Jones) were bombed back out.

We should be providing opportunities for players of the likes of Nathan Wood. Thankfully I think we will see that happen under Carrick.
