Neville Wanless RIP

Wasn't that someone called Peter Hetherington - who was later convicted of

He was a presenter on Radio Tees not Tyne Tees.

He used to do the slots in between the shows and read the news occasionally. I remember it very well coz my sister had a huge crush on him and she would rush in every time he was on the box!

This is a tribute to Neville Wanless who passed away this weekend aged 89.
The former continuity announcer at Tyne Tees - very popular - a gentle presence on the box from 1958-88

He also used to do George Formby shows on the ukulele.

This is how Neville closed transmission - and with an added mention for the lads snowed in up at Emley Moor

NEVILLE CLOSE DOWN CLIP

Voice as gentle as central heating,
newly installed, defrosting the day,
as nice as a smiley birthday greeting
keeping blackouts and strikes at bay.

Days off from passing our minutes gaily
you spent being George on a ukulele.
A goodnight kiss within a poem’s confines
for a gentle man from gentler times.

Does anyone remember when Neville did continuity dressed up as John from the Sci fi programme 'V'?... He wore a ball cap and sunglasses.
Just me?
