New Broadband Deal Required

My sky package is up next month and will be putting my notice in at the end of the week and switching to a broadband only deal somewhere.

Just been having a mooch on money supermarket and Pop Telecom seem to have good speeds at a very cheap price.

Anyone use them or have used them?

Or one stream Fibre ?

Or Shell Energy Fibre?

Very mixed reviews online.

Plus net prices and speeds seem decent enough as well.

Anyone any other recommendations, virgin not an option where I live.

I'm with Shell for fibre and it's fine, no complaints. Do be aware though it's been bought by Octopus and all customers will be transferred in the next few months.

Shell fibre etc will all be based on openreach network, so all you're really doing is paying for the customer services and device, there are some other minor tweaks but in general it's all the same other than that.

Other than that it's virgin, or alt-nets like youfibre, city fibre etc

As above, use cashback websites.

I have been with Shell for 18 months and no issues. Due renewal next week and they have offered the same terms as previously.

If I could I would renew with shell happily with the gift voucher via moneysavingexpert.

As it stands I wont get anything for renewing expect convenience so I am not sure yet.

What are Grain like? We get leaflets from them regularly.
Grain are doing my head in the state they are leaving the paths and verges. Twice I've had to get a council inspector to get them to go back and repair the mess they left behind. Reporting them again tomorrow for another area they have left a total mess.

It's because they only pay the contractors £15-20/m to dig up the verge, so there's no money to be made unless it's a very small company with no overheads, and they throw it in fast and get out of there fast. The cost of a digging gang for a day is ~£1,000-£1,500 depending on the standard, so they need to be putting in ~100m a day to cover other overheads or make any money.

The do the less than the minimum (far less than the contract states) on thousands of meters, and will only get called back to make ~10% of it better, so it's more cost effective to just sort out what gets complained about. They still don't make much money even doing this, but it's why we get loads of internet cables and competition all over the place basically.

It was the same with comcast/ NTL decades ago when they put in the fibres which virgin have now taken over, or taken over their duct network with improved cables etc. Same with cityfibre, or any of the other 20 or so companies starting new fibre networks since.

They also avoid digging roads, or putting cables to places where there are no easy verge routes, as the roads cost 3x to dig and take 3x more time.

Grass won't even grow from October onwards, so they don't even try.

Did you get anywhere with this?

I started a contract with them >18 months ago, and think it was either a 12 or 18 moth contract, so either way it's done, but they've jacked the price from £130 to £200 since, and I ain't having it, especially when the broadband and multi room signals are crap in half the house.

It was easer to get better deals when I had virgin in the old house, as I knew plenty of people working there, but no virgin feed at this house.

I went with Plusnet fibre, sacked sky off, they didnt offer me anything of note after putting my notice in either. Plus net use the BT router which seems a lot better than my old Sky one and had better reviews than the others. House coverage is vastly improved.

Have Netflix, Amazon, Disney and freeview basically now.

What broadband speed is it, and what are you paying now?

What were you paying before, and what for etc?

£24.50 a month for full fibre 145 I actually get around 140 as well so not too bad, was about a fiver more for 300 which I considered and decided I’d upgrade later if I thought I needed it but i haven’t.

I previously had Sky 32 which was about the same price. Just on the broadband I was paying £22 they were putting it up to £25

Youfibre...we got the first 3 months for a £1
This if you can, look for local providers. Check the T&C's on whichever product you choose for the annual price increase. I have gigabit fibre to my home with Jurassic Fibre, no upload or download restrictions, £40 a month. Also, they aren't subject to the silly laws that BT et al have to abide by regarding 'alternative' locations for content.

I wouldn't ever go back to a major provider now for just broadband.

I'm up at the end of March and have been told that virgin are now available in my area after many years because they use the Openreach cables to get to my property. It does still require an ugly grey box outside of the house and it's not particularly small.

I'm on 200mb with Vodafone and it's been working fine but I think I might be tempted by the Virgin 1gb for not a lot more as an introduction offer.

Do these new alternatives such as grain, Youfibre, Hyperopic etc install their own cables? Or are they leasing virgin access? I suppose I wonder how realistic it is to expect there to be some proper competition in the coming years, given its taken until 2023 to get access to virgin.

Any thoughts?
