New look Labour

This is the direction of travel for Labour under Keir, pictures next to union jack's and veterans looking smart at war memorials (who knows what that even means?!)...

So essentially Tory from the Cameron era.

"One slide says: ‘Communicating Labour’s respect and commitment for the country can represent a change in the party’s body language’.

Among the top recommendations is: ‘The use of the flag, veterans, dressing smartly at the war memorial etc [to] give voters a sense of authentic values alignment.’

Approached for a response, a senior Labour official said the language came from an agency’s research rather than their own phrasing.

Clive Lewis, one of Labour’s most prominent ethnic minority MPs, said: ‘The Tory party has absorbed Ukip and now Labour appears to be absorbing the language and symbols of the Tory party.’"

I honestly didn't realise that Keir would be quite this poor as leader, I thought at least he might have picked up on the way the wind is blowing but clearly it's just go further right then Tory light.

Maybe the direction of the wind has changed

Not having a leader that at best clearly resents their own country can only help Labour.

I'm sure there's more to their policies than flags and patriotism, but it's something they need to try and reclaim anyway.
Believe it or not, most people actually like their country.

I love my country but I'd be hoping for more than one party representing it. 😉

Alvez, I am not sure what exactly you are complaining about? Is it the lack of substance to the proposed shift? Or are there some policies being announced that you disagee with?

Everybody likes their country.

This type of research got the Tories an 80 seat majority.

It's a shame it doesn't work as simply as that eh. Wave a flag and instantly flip 150 odd seats.

In reality Labour are putting everything they've got in to trying to appeal to people who won't vote Labour no matter what.

It doesn't, but it helps understand peoples behaviour. As I said, I don't like it but it worked very effectively for the Tories.

They are targeting red wall voters and swing voters in marginals.

I think this is a good idea. The vast majority of the electorate never read a manifesto but waving the union flag and spouting slogans like make Britain great again, whilst highlighting over 100,000 deaths caused by tory inaction could gain a hell of a lot of traction.

Sadly its the sort of thing that wins votes, as we have found out people are not really interested in polices and what a government might do to level up to make their lives better.
They want a snazzy suit and jingoism

I would just expect some substance to Starmer given so many of the gammons on here say he has it.

It's just more and more evidence that he's not in any way 'left'. If I want to vote for a right wing then I have a blue team to go for.

It's a report in the Guardian of one policy that started last year.

This isn't Starmer releasing a video of him coming out of his house in a Union Jack suit and saluting our veterans, and nothing else.

It's not front and centre of Labour policy and it's weird to pretend it is.
Labour has an image problem with the ordinary voter when it comes to patriotism and it makes total sense to try an address that.

For too long have the Tories been able to pick up the voters who prioritise this sort of thing uncontested.

I agree on the current lack of policy substance but I think I know why.

Firstly at a time of national crisis it is a fine line to walk for an opposition party. External threats tend to garner support for the incumbent government. Attacking the government just looks like playing politics.

Secondly Labour have started to reveal policies to their own supporters, one would assume to see how it plays.

I would think by the end of 2021 the electorate should know what Labour stand for. If it's a bit right for you then, then fair enough.

To get elected you have to be in tune with what your average Joe calls common sense, something Tony Blair understood but unfortunately no Labour leader has since. Blair even got the Tory party to change their image!

I am hopeful Starmer might be the leader to do this for Labour, otherwise we are stuck with ever more extreme Tories making life harder for the poorer.

The whole anti-semitism debate under Corbyn, like the CND debate in the early 80s, are symptoms of what happens when labour turns to ideology and ignores the voters. There's a reason we have never had a revolution in Britain....we are a country that evolves, hopefully this can be towards social democracy rather than the current self interest?

Indeed.

What Labour must understand is that most people vote for the Party they think most represents them in general, not specific policies. Labour have long won the intellectual battle, but it isn't enough. Whenever they win the emotional battle as well, they win a landslide. The landslide is coming if the left unite.

I’m not a Labour voter anymore but I can’t see what’s wrong with the use of the flag, promoting veterans and straightening your tie at the cenotaph. What’s the issue here? Does anyone object to Sturgeon having the saltire pinned to her every time we clap eyes on her or Varadkar and his mates standing by the Tricolour? No they don’t and nor should they.

It's the right approach, the days of workers going to the steel works , home to their council house and the club are over

Mondeo man like this is the right approach. Quoting a 1918 document with Clause 4 is pointless.

Any labour government has to better than this shower of corruption.

He needs to hammer home the success of the NHS staff, promise to increase their pay.
