No match day thread ?

He seems to try to nutmeg the defender with his crosses but 75% of them just rattle against the defender’s shins. Can someone tell him to stop it

Some of players clearly aren’t listening, and it’s dragging the rest down, it’s like some of them only no lumping it forward. When we do this it completely undermines the entire setup/ game plan of the team.

As soon as we brought the footballers on, we largely stopped launching it and it’s been night and day,

McNair, fry, Roberts out, maybe Clarke too, mcgree in midfield for mowatt and two forwards up top, stop the cause of most of the problems (giving them the ball), and give us a better chance of scoring.

This is practically what I said in the first half, look at the difference.

Loads of the fans wanted McNair RB, fry CB and were even talking of roberts being ahead of steffen, today is a good example of why it won’t work. We’ve been lucky in a couple of the games we’ve started that way (Sunderland and Swansea). We had to play that way against Watford, as they’re better than us.
Some players aren't listening? They were all dreadful first half. Nothing to do with with the players picked or the formation. Or you being right and "loads of fans" being wrong.
They come out tippytoeing around. Missing easy passes. Every time we passed it from one defender to another they looked shocked they were being passed the ball. This team has got no bottle. We continue every game to just stop playing for at least 20 minutes. Usually 45. Doesn't matter who is playing. Or how unlucky we are. Or the refs being *****. Or how much better our xg is. Players need to show some belief and some mettle.

At least the 2nd half was positive, we have to play 2 up top from now on and McNair cannot be in the back 3, no idea what has happened to him but he has been awful this season both defensively and on the ball. Towards the end of the 1st half Clarke and McNair were just lumping it forward, it's completely pointless, we don't have the players for it. Dijksteel might fall asleep at times like he did at Stoke but at least we can play out from the back with him and he has a bit of pace so that teams can't just constantly play balls in behind us.

I'd play Bola on the left as well but could understand if he wanted to go with Clarke again, Dijksteel has to play though. McGree might be a bit weak defensively but he is quality on the ball, he has to play instead of Mowatt who seems to be giving us absolutely nothing.

Dijksteel should be first name on that team sheet, we need some pace at the back, we need a CB that is comfortable pushing forward.

McGree isn't a 10, too inconsistent in that role, we lack a midfielder who can push on and create something.....solve both those problems by dropping Mowatt and playing McGree in his proper role

Keeper, get Steffen back in when fit

Howson and Clarke on final warnings, buck up or bench, Bola and Luongo are waiting for their turn.

Oh and two strikers Watmore or Forss alongside Muniz

There is definitely some mentality and self belief issues in this squad. Need a general to get stuck into them on the pitch, which is what I thought Lenihan was brought in for, but I’ve not really seen it from him.

I’ve got to say Dijksteel and Bola are better than the two fellas who have come in to replace them and despite buying three forward’s Watmore’s still our most effective. Not much needed changing from last season, but once again we’ve fallen into the trap of bringing in players no better than we had before!

I think we have too many players starting games at the moment who are naturally inclined to slow the game down. McNair, Fry, Howson, Mowatt. For some reason when they're all on Jones kind of plays the same way too. Dijksteel has to start matches just to get us to speed up a bit. Tav at LCM always played in a rush so to not have him is a massive loss.

Stupid first half to play one up front and then play long balls all half. If we're playing a 10 and getting an extra body in midfield we need to use him.

In a nut shell. (y)

Our formation change got us back into the game as well as personnel change
Can’t keep playing five at the back
It was mostly the half time changes I think and there wasn't a formation change at that point. When bola came on it was really a last throw of the dice and wilder wouldn't start with that formation.

Out problem in the first half was we just weren't competing, for anything. The back three were lumping it forwards and we weren't getting second balls so it was coming straight back.

I think that just shows you what a mess this transfer window has been that Watmore is still our 2nd best striker.

Why is Wilder getting it so wrong though? Again it doesn’t matter what the fans want they don’t pick the team.

Someone highlighted earlier out of 9 games this season we have been 3-0 down at HT in 3 of them! That’s an awful statistic.
I’m 200% certain he’s not telling them to launch it, that back 3 and keeper just keep trying to dig holes, it’s like they’re scared of making mistakes so leather it, rather than playing it out. But leathering it will be a mistake 9/10, unless were genuinely backs to the wall (like away at good sides).

He’s picked them largely through injury, and probably in the hope we can keep it tighter, but it’s counter productive when they give it away so easy. They’ve had nearly 3/4 games now, trying that and Wilders likely let it slide as we’ve scraped two wins. Seems he’s been second guessing himself, the games before those 3/4 we were much better, but never got the points to show for it.

It knacks the forwards as they’re not long ball style players, and it screws the midfield as we lack pace to get up and support the long balls, then get back again after we lose it due to isolated players.

Don’t be surprised for a brand new back 4 nect game, steffen, Dijk, Lenihan and bola, although I think Clarke will be better when he doesn’t have fry and roberts as passing options (as he knows they’ll launch it anyway). Jones looks a different player with Dijk behind/ beside him, he’s not scared to take people on, knowing Dijk backs up and has cover pace. Jones crossing wasnt great tonight mind.

Mcgree in for mowatt too, just more attacking overall. If we aim for clean sheets it looks good for 4 players (in the rare occasion it will work), but might as well be shooting the rest of the squad in the back.

Better second half and clearly the players were playing for wilder. His team selection invited the first half score line. We were so bad in that first 45,the worst I can recall
What I don’t understand is why he isn’t flexible enough to change it earlier - it was obviously not working after twenty minutes - why wait until we are three down and half time. The manager has to take a lot of the blame for that tonight!

It is an awful statistic. Mostly because its wrong. As bad a start as we've had this season, its only been twice we've let in 3 goals in any of our matches.

I would agree with this. Get back to the formation from the start of the season and get a bit of pace in the team. I think Jones misses Dijksteele too.
