O'Brien going down like that

The Howson one was different imo. The Norwich player put his studs on Howson’s thigh. He may not have applied force but Howson stepped back and made sure the referee noticed it. Howson seemed to be saying oi, you can’t do that ref and the referee agreed. It looked soft but even at the time I understood why it was a red card. I think the Norwich player had at least considered the idea of planting his studs into Howson’s thigh with force.

Last night was different. I don’t think Carvalho was anywhere near O’Brien’s face? It was embarrassing to see a Boro player doing that. It was up there with McMahon’s dive all those years ago.

O'brien going down the way he did last night was disgrace and I made my feeling on it clear last night. Hopefully don't see him do it again and it was an isolated moment of stupidity. We've all had them.

But that aside, I think we've seen growth from O'Brien through the season as he's adapted to the role. He's asked to do something very different from what he did with Huddersfield. I like his attitude, energy and I think he's pretty tidy on the ball. He's positive and tries to go forward. It actually reminds me a little bit of Howson's first season. There was a lot of apathy around the fans about Howson when he first signed but he quickly established himself as a fan favourite over the following seasons. He was also asked to do something very different for Boro than what he had at Norwich and Leeds and he has adapted his game to become a superb servant in that position.

I would be happy with signing O'Brien as I think he has the potential to be that same sort of player for Boro. He's a good Championship player so I don't see him as someone who would be looking to move on if things were going well. He's been there and done that.

I’m not condoning what he did, it was a childish action to take, but in his defence, he was having his ankles bitten quite a bit by their players; so I suppose he’d had enough. He needs to reflect on his behaviour, and to cut it out in the future.
