O'Brien/Greenwood/Thomas not staying says Gazette

Agree, quite like O’Brien but he obviously didn’t do quite enough for Mr C.
With Jonny and Hayden the main men in there with barlassor and possibly Law Mac breaking through - and, I think they will be going for another, from somewhere or he could already be lined up.

Now, when you think about it, he didn’t play O’Brien at Cardiff or the last game it makes sense that he had already made his mind up 🤷‍♂️

Maybe he is too expensive or wages are for him.
If we sell Hackney then I wouldn't be against the idea of us signing O'Brien.

I'd be happy with us having Howson, Barlaser, McCabe, a new DM and one of either O'Brien and Hackney.

We got billongo to add competition at left back so dont need thomas really , gilbert could mix and match across the front positions as greenwood did and obrien needs to be replaced with a more physical player IMO, also would be too expensive by sounds of it.

I reckon Bilongo will be released in the summer, he’s nowhere near championship level at this moment in time

No way would O’Brien be a good replacement for
Hackney, he can’t receive under pressure, turn and drive us up the pitch
I thought in the Leeds home game O'Brien was shown up for his lack of mettle in the middle of the park as he was constantly dispossessed and maybe even easily bullied. Granted he's has some decent games for us and one thing in particular he definitely has a really good engine compared to Barlaser. Maybe we need a bigger guy in the middle of the park one who can hold onto the ball in tight situations and win the 2-1 duels.

Looks like we are keeping Hackney then? Gilbert has shown that he can step up to replace Greenwood and Bangura and Engel are improving all the time.

He was driving us up the pitch when we played Leeds.

1 defeat in our final 12 games and he played nearly every game and put in some good performances.

He did ok, but over the course of a season he isn’t going to get as many progressive runs and he will lose the ball more, he hasn’t shown that he can consistently perform near Hackneys level, the odd decent game isn’t enough over a 46 game season

Gitau as cover for Ayling/ Smith?
Was thinking the same too. He was in the squad a fair bit the season prior the one just finished and I am guessing we'd have seen a lot of him this year but for injury. He's certainly done himself no harm with the goals and performances for the u21 side since he got fit.

I think we would have taken O'Brien had it not been for the costs involved, but that may change as we approach the end of the window, if he hasn't found a club by then.
I could see this happening.

No way will forest be registering him in the PL squad (if they stay up which is likely) so could be worth playing a waiting game.

If at the end of august a loan deal with subsidised wages and small loan fee can be agreed, or a permanent with a low fee and forest paying him off, think it will happen, if we haven't secured other primary targets.

O'Brien will want guaranteed game time, he won't get that here. I see him as a West Brom or Coventry signing. Could be the replacement for Alex Mowatt or Ben Sheaf?

Makes complete sense to me this. Greenwood has shown moments of quality and at least managed to stay fit but has been largely anonymous since Christmas when he should have been stepping up. Thomas was only there to cover Bagura's injury and if there was an opportunity to stay then he certainly hasn't grasped it with performances ranging from poor to average only.

O'Brien is the only one I might have been tempted to keep as he's had some good games even despite his injury however I just don't see how buying from a Premier League club will give us value for money for someone who isn't a 'must have'. We can undoubtedly get the same quality cheaper elsewhere, or even better quality.

Ayling is the standout and he's delivered almost from a standing start given his lack of football in the first half of the season, with no excuses. Needed only a few games to get up to speed and, crucially, making a bit difference to the team both defensively and with his many assists.
