Octopus smart meter

Octopus have contacted me wanting to fit smart meters, is it a good or bad idea ?

I wouldn’t stress too much, your paying for what you use regardless.

I got lucky with my gas one last year it stopped working the screen on it froze meaning the digits don’t go up, they didn’t notice until we started getting those government winter credits. Must of saved me somewhere around £600.

Just be careful on switch over that the engineer puts the right units in the paperwork..

My mam hit a leccy bill for £3k and they tried to quadruple her bill.. she was gonna pay it until I pointed out cannabis growers use less energy..

Took a while but eventually got a real person on the phone we could understand and she said it was clear what had happened and sorted it out with the press of a button..

Octopus do have good customer service if you can get go talk to one…

I changed over to a smart meter with Octopus a couple of years ago and find it makes checking usage much easier. I haven’t had any problems, in fact I have mostly been in credit.

Why do you need a smart meter to tell you you're using gas and electric.?

Clue - When you turn a light on your using it.
When you turn the light off you're not 👍

I've never had a problem with that concept....

If it doesn't work it will still work like an old meter where you can do manual readings

No Brainer for me to have more info about live usage when costs are so high

Mine was put in and has never worked. I have had it about 3 years, have moved companies 3 times (now to octopus) but all say they will sort it then radio silence
Get onto octopus on Twitter and they'll sort it. They swapped mine out and gave me a new display which I don't use because it doesn't work with the tracker

got one fitted in September, easy enough and the meter sits in the kitchen.

only complaint i have is that the meter "budget" line is no where even close to my monthly payment (payment is higher) so it flashes as a warning that im over budget when i know for a fact I am not.

Have you adjusted your budget? It's a setting on tbe ihd display rather than your payment

If you're on tracker as well (can't remember if you are or not) the £ values will never be right, but the kWh amount will be

I would need to get a Twitter account to do that.. I will continue with my passive aggressive emails every few weeks when I remember that it’s not working

They fit the SMETS2 meters so compatibility with other suppliers, my in house display doesn't work though the app is excellent & I use more than I'd look at the reader anyway - you will use what you will use, the bonus is not having to read & send readings to the company in the middle of winter..
