On this day in 1779 Captain James Cook was Killed

whats a 'Wokes' ?.
A woke or wokes is this years insulting term to anybody who puts an alternative view.

Last year it was a snowflake.

Many people who use the terms (and I’m not referring to the poster above) have no idea what they actually mean.

Captain Cook will be ok, he was an explorer, mind you I once sat next to an Australian woman on a bus in Iceland who gave me a right going over because in making conversation I mentioned I’d been to Captain Cooks School.

I was a bit taken aback, she was down the line of being insulted that her country has been ‘discovered’ when it existed already, that sort of thing. She wasn’t the most pleasant, can’t imagine they all have that view in Australia, ‘discovered’ has a particular meaning in terms of Captain Cook which I think most sensible people appreciate.

Didn’t Jimbo introduce them to the Parmo ? Maybe thats why she was mad as they’re probably all about 4 stone overweight .
That and having to support the Boro when they could of been discovered by someone from Liverpool, Southampton or even Bristol

I've actually stood on the exact spot where they think it happened.
If I can find the picture I'll post it.
To get there you have to pay one of the locals to help you paddle over ( well you don't have to but it's expected that you will).
There's actually a town on big island , hawai'i called Captain Cook .

was there any graffiti knocking about with “ Boro boys on tour 1779 “ from his crew ?

Cook didn't discover Australia, that was more than likely ( other than the inhabitants and some S east Asian fishermen) a certain William Dampier , a fascinating man.
Interesting fact ... Who took over command at Cooks death? Capt William Bligh. He of the Mutiny on the bounty.

The Dutch were the first known Europeans to see Australia.

Willem Janszoon is the earliest recorded in the early 1600s, Dampier is just the first English man to do so and that was decades later.

He didnt. Captain Clerke took over but died from TB before the voyage was completed, contracted in a debtor prison where he resided between the 2nd and 3rd voyage to pay off debts incurred by his brother.
The young Lt Bligh learned to navigate from Cook skills that saved his life in the mutiny.

Cook gets a mention in one of the Bligh films , second one I think with Anthony Hopkins . Didn’t Cook discover and map/ chart Eastern Australian coast ?

Cook charted the east coast extremely accurately. He was the first European to do so and by joining the dots felt he had disproved the theory of a great southern continent of the size of North America or Europe - but this didn't satisfy everyone and he was sent out again to try again. His second voyage was basically a voyage to disprove this by travelling everywhere south, north, east and west to show it wasn't there.
Obviously he did not discover East Australia as there had been people there for maybe 65 000 years - and that is one of the major controversies. Cook claimed Australia for Britain and those that followed (including future governor of New South Wales, Bligh) based their rights on Australia being an "empty land." It plainly was not. Did Cook himself ever say this? Did he have the authority to declare this, he wasn't even a captain in the Navy at the time?
Tragically there was an incredible racism and apartheid practised in Australia. I don't think the apartheid in Australia is as widely known in Britain as it is in South Africa. I didn't appreciate it until recently. But it was far reaching and discrimination and debate continues to this day.
And much of the anti-Cook emotion can be rooted in what followed him, especially in Australia. History in Australia and through much of the Pacific as it was later taught started post J.C. only in this case James Cook.
This is a very simplistic post but I feel as a Trustee of Captain Cook Birthplace that we have to recognise this and also educate people here about the people that came before Cook and the Europeans - and their beliefs and cultures. The way they interacted with nature has much to teach us now and it is something James Cook himself recognised and actually wrote about in his voyage accounts.

Have you seen BLM activists have James Cook in their sights? Statues, hospital, schools.

'James Cook invaded Australia just over 250 years ago... What followed was 250 years of genocidal activities and policies based on race that murdered thousands of women, men and children. Captain Cook symbolises racial oppression and violence. It must be removed.'

It's getting silly now. Rob, you will have to hide your costume!
