Our Midfield

I'm not a Negative Nigel, I am realistic.

However, our midfield doesn't do anything does it.

We don't win much, it doesn't carry the ball, not combatative, no slick passing.

What does it actually do?

Our crossing and the movement from our so-called striker let us down tonight. Johnson had a few great chances to put a decent ball in and he fluffed it every time. Coulson also doesn't seem to know what to do when he gets near the opposition box.

Howson put the only decent ball in when he moved to right back, pulling it back for Saville I think.

I could kind of forgive it should we have been playing a decent team but they were shocking ( what does that say about us )

Apparently our 15M "striker" scored his first goal in 12 games! [And a pen at that].

Did you see him chuckling away when he trotted off , all quite funny isn’t it Britt ?

Britt is clearly not very good. Fletcher is a better finisher, but for me is too lightweight to play the lone striker. We do not have the personnel to play a lone striker. We do not have the pace in the squad to support anyone in that role. Everything we did well was with Roberts and Spence down the right. Johnson and Coulson were poor down the left. Wing lollops around the pitch like a Mancunian in a shop doorway on spice. McNair seems like he is playing within himself. Friend is not a centre half, his positional sense is lacking and gets outmuscled at times. We lack height all over the team now as well. I think we have enough to stay up but we may have to rely on Wigans 12 point deduction, it will be nip and tuck. QPR is a must win for me now.

I should add, we need to keep the ball on the deck, far too much head tennis goes on and we rarely win when that goes on.

Always enjoy your synopsis Coluka ( sure they have the craft of lolloping in Stockton better than that in Manchester. Teesside rule the UK at it ) 👌

For me, the quality of crossing has been poor for years but it's the sheer lack of crossing that is alarming. We dilly dally around the box and miss the moment

We were far more effective with Britt and Fletcher together up front v Stoke. Can't believe Warno didn't started with that - or at least revert to it when it was obvious things weren't working as well as they should have. 2 strikers v Hull was surely a no brainer!....... behave!

In fairness we don’t get to see the training so maybe Fletch is not 100% . Remember we have another big game on Sunday so he elected to use him as a plan B yesterday for an ‘easier’ game .

I think this is the dilemma he faces Borobarmy. He knows we only really have Britt and Fletcher as NMecha is poor and was perhaps trying to manage the squad so he can keep people fresh and reduce the risk of injuries what with a game every 3 or 4 days from now on in. However, I think if that was in his thinking yesterday was the wrong game to do that in.

However, I think more likely was he looked at Hull and realised they have pace down the flanks and wanted to combat that with a similar game plan to perhaps use what pace we had to take advantage in the spaces they left in behind. It worked well down the right in the first half but we were not cute enough with the final ball as usual. They never really looked like scoring till we switched off. We should have had the game sown up in truth. Hey ho bring on QPR

That’s where a good captain screaming at them and soldiering them is worth their weight in gold . Yesterday ( being kind to the performance ) and so many times this season we’ve took our foot off the gas towards the end and duly got punished .
