Our Previous League Cup Semis

I can still picture Fergie pointing at the Boro fans and then cupping his ear at the Stretford End. He then proceeded to act as a choirmaster and the noise inside Old Trafford rose to a defending sound with both sets of supporters trying to cheer their team on.

I think 35,000 United supporters narrowly out sung 10,000 Boro fans.

We had a few chances to win the game but two good saves from Schmeichel, one at the feet of Wilkinson and the other the Falconer header, and then there was the goal line clearance by Pallister after Hendry chipped Schmeichel. Don't get me wrong, on another day Man U might have won the buster if it wasn't from some great tackles from the defence and a brilliant performance from Pears.

No one remembers anything about the 1st leg!

I obviously have to mention the piece I wrote about Willie Falconer’s header at Old Trafford for Scottish football periodical Nutmeg magazine. I got to interview him for it and he was absolutely buzzing that people still talk about it. It’s etched into Boro folklore.

I was at the home leg, the 0-0, but deemed too young for away night matches that season. I’ve been to Liverpool and Stockport away, including the called-off game at Stockport, and all the home legs. None before 1991 as I wasn’t going then and wasn’t born for the ones before 1983.

I think this cup run is just fantastic for us. I’m definitely going to try and get a ticket for Stamford Bridge but don’t really fancy my chances. I can’t wait for these games to come around. It’s why we’re here.

Also that away leg at Anfield was absolutely brilliant. The noise when Merson scored, I can still sense the rawness of it. I remember a man coming down from behind us, sort of crowd-surfing but not really, just diving around, and a massive ghetto blaster appearing from somewhere. It was non-stop singing all night. And even though we lost 2-1, the whole Boro end was signing we’re going to Wembley after the final whistle. Incredible.

And the Stockport away game, the incessant rain and muddy pitch. I don’t remember much of the game apart from trying to work out whether we’d scored and then realised Rav was celebrating and the whole terrace erupting, and then I jumped down under the railing and straight into a massive puddle at the front that went above my ankles. You can’t beat it.

Schwarzer's debut wasn't it?
I remember thinking that we had signed a 'proper' keeper. He was so assured.

Lennie's promotion side really underrated, shame we couldn't stay up the following season. Had some bad luck with injuries and over reliance on defenders who weren't up for the top flight.

The perfect football team IMO. We could play, hit the big man, battle, scrap, had fantastic wingers, skill, local lads and lads from elsewhere who fully bought into it. That’s my favourite Boro team.

Missed City away. Too young to go on my own and weirdly Dad didn’t go.
Our crowd at OT that night is a famous away showing for older United fans. Spectacular. I will never forget the feeling.

Winning at Highbury against the Invincibles was remarkable.
I knew when we left Anfield that we’d do them at Riverside. I missed the home leg as was on holiday in Australia.
Only Boro would do Stockport that way round.

Surely we deserve a break against Chelsea?

I still picture being stood in the away end watching Falconers header loop towards the top corner at the other end of the ground only for Schmeichel to pull off an absolute worldy of a save.

At the end of the game I remember us all chanting 'we are going up' and I knew after that night with absolute confidence that we were!

I think we’ll beat them on penalties and progress to Wembley. And then win promotion at Wembley in May.

Did both legs of the United game, home leg against Stockport, both of the Liverpool games and the home leg against Arsenal.

Wasn't the most memorable game. I can recall Parky had a couple of long range efforts on target that Schmeichel clawed away, and I'm sure Mark Hughes or Neil Webb put the ball over the bar from a couple of yards out at the East End.
