Not saving money now are they?

I gather P&O Ferries took £10m from UK taxpayers during the pandemic - are they going to pay this back, as they are not operating in the UK according to them.
 
New legislation proposed to force those operating marine vessels from UK ports to pay employees the UK minimum wage. We'll see.
 
This is all bolting the stable door after the horse bolted about 40 odd years ago when the UK merchant navy was decimated by foreign flagging of vessels and globalisation of the maritime community.

Indeed. Not just the merchant navy was it? That's globalisation for you. Oversupply of cheap labour to force down wages so that the share price and dividends increase at the expense of the workers. The rich get richer...

I suppose some sort of EU version of the US Jones Act could've offered some protectionism but that would've just gone out of the window for us with Brexit.
