Panorama - Boxing and the Mob

Certainly worth a watch. It details how one of the major crime syndicates in Europe is heavily involved in British and American boxing. It's alleged that MTK Global is used as a vehicle to launder money for the Kinahan cartel. Those who regularly deal with MTK include Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren. Hundreds of boxers are signed to MTK, perhaps the most well known is Tyson Fury who is very close to the head of the cartel, Daniel Kinahan.

Apparently MTK are significantly undercutting other management outfits to get pretty much any boxer they want. Barry McGuigan is on the programme speaking about what is going on. No one else in the sport would probably want to speak on camera. It will be interesting to see what comes from this but it's not a good look for the likes of Warren and Hearn.

It was a good watch, all a bit circumstantial though wasn't it. Paints the sport in a very bad light but as LM says it's pretty much a given that organised crime is all over boxing, not that that should be accepted mind.

Not sure about the credentials of the lady who founded Fake Bake mind. Bit strange

I watched it last night, and to be honest i had never heard of the Daniel Kinahan before that. I knew of MTK, but not at all surprised about the involvement of organised crime in Boxing.

Big clean up required and long overdue. Sounds like some of these guys will be facing extradition and jail time.

You only have to go back to Don Kings involvement in boxing to see how the mob are involved. If anyone should never of held a promotors licence, it is him.

I will watch that this afternoon.

Since 2015 the Kinahan and Hutch gang feud in Dublin has claimed about 20 lives so far. It is very one sided and has torn families apart. It is an International Cartel v a City gang basically. The Kinahans have the manpower, money, and weapons to destroy all opposition though and about 30 of their members have been jailed so far so they are weakened. The irony is they were all in the same large cartel but the shooting of Gary Hutch brought about the split. Three great books on the feud I would recommend for anyone interested? - Gerry Hutch aka The Monk, The Cartel, and Fat Freddie Thompson.

as you referenced last week MC - when Kav got in the ring for him.
There is the story that Conor McGregor assaulted a cartel member when drunk in a Dublin pub and had to pay the cartel £900,000 in compensation!!! He mixes with some very shady characters in Dublin as he grew up with most of them. It was Daniel Kinahans father Christy who set up the gang years ago, which has now spread across the world. He has handed the control now to Daniel. He liked to keep a low profile but Daniel is the exact opposite it would appear.

I did not see the TV program, but this article has come up on the BBC website today, which covers the same subject:

In one of the books about DK it says people are so afraid to mention his name in conversation so they refer to him as 'Cancer' Scary stuff.

I think it was mentioned in the show that it is notoriously under licenced the boxing fraternity, and Eddie Hearn was quoted in the show that he has to deal with anyone who the boxers are associated with, so he is pretty absolved really as it sounds as though a lot of these promoters and stable owners aren't licenced. It's not Eddie's job to do background checks on them. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he knows who and what DK is, but he's not exactly going to call him out about it and voice his concerns.

Boxing has always had the link with shady characters. The Krays were very close to top boxers in their time. Didn't Frank Warren escape an assassination attempt also? The irony is many boxers used to go into boxing as they said it was an alternative to a life in crime. DK has become a virtual prisoner now in Dubai with the Irish Garda after him and trying to have him extradited. He is holed up with about 12 of his cronies. He went there because Ireland doesn't have an extradition warrant with UAE but that may change. Its OK to have millions of pounds in the bank, but if you're stuck in a baking hot country, being monitored constantly, and cannot go anywhere else, it mustn't be much fun.

It’s been going on for years. It once took six policemen to arrest Sonny Liston yet a few years later he retired in his corner against Ali with a sore shoulder! Also he lost again to Ali under allegations of a fix.

Wasn't Frank Warren's attempted assassination linked to the 'fighting fireman' Terry Marsh?
frank warren
Just googled it - Marsh was charged but found not guilty.
Now that was a very dramatic episode!

Enjoyed this Panorama.
It brought back to me the events at 'The Regency' that I remember seeing on the Evening News.
The news article touched on the fact that the gunfight was part of something much bigger - this program puts it all into context.

Fare play Barry Mcguigan - always comes across as one of life's 'good guys'.
Didn't realise he'd lost so many fighters - thought I hadn't seen him around as much during recent fight nights.
