* Paul Merson "The Magic Man" Boro Goals. 97/98 [V-06:41] *

great player obviously, but it was so disappointing the way he left us.
I agree. He said how much he loved the club and how he would like to manage us one day. He was gone weeks later! Some player though. In my top 5 best players I've seen in a Boro shirt.

Given his now reported antics with Gazza I imagine it was wise for him to get away.

When I was a teenage lad I was really angry with him for the way he left. But now, looking back and knowing what we know about his mental state and in an era of more understanding about mental health, it’s clear he was in a bad place mentally.

For us to house him with Gazza, considering his own issues and both being alcoholics, was a disgraceful thing to do by the club.

It’s amazing he was so good for us when you look back. Maybe the football pitch was the only place he found solace.

What I notice about those goals is how often he is through on goal one on one. He wasn’t blessed with great pace but his reading of the game and the timing of his runs were brilliant. Very gifted footballer, if flawed human being.

Maybe if we had handled his situation with a bit more understanding things would have been different.

Another regret from that time was not being able to hang onto Emerson. I think he played half that season and it looked like we were gonna be promoted. Playing so well with Merson and Higgy, what a combo. Shame he left before we were back in the Prem. Did Merson leave before the next season started too? Missed opportunity

Think he played a couple of games then he was off. Agree with everything you said. Housing him and Gazza together was an outrageous decision.

How many assists that season too? He was fantastic. Made Beck look a much better player as well.
He had to leave. He was having a huge mental crisis.

Not sure what you mean. Emerson left in January but we did get promoted.
