Paying to go to the loo at a gig

Brussels last night - lovely venue 3000 capacity

After feeling a bit angsty about it when I had to cough up half a euro I couldn’t help thinking it has legs.
The other thing they did was have the bar token only -
Buy tokens in 1 euro multiples.
All drinks priced at 3.50, 4.50 etc
No change given

Not sure whether it was coincidence or not but it was the most respectful gig crowd I’ve ever been in.
Even during the support act - no whispers, let alone ‘loud banter and crack’ of tanked up people wandering around.
The enthusiasm for him (lad called Nick Hakim) was just brill. He was genuinely overwhelmed.

Then Adrienne Lenker (of Big Thief fame).
Whoa - she wears her heart on her sleeve. Wonderfully vulnerable - the connection to the crowd was immediate and it remained intimate throughout.
The support she got almost brought her to tears.
What a fantastic night it was.

Maybe charge at the Riverside too? 😂
 
Why not just price the drinks at €4, €5 instead ?
What was he queue like to buy the bar tokens ?
Is it really much quicker than contactless for example?

Sounds like a good gig though 🙂
 
I've been to football matches in Belgium. In the concourses no cash, debit cards or credit cards. You have your own prepaid card (which costs €1) and you top it up online.

In Amsterdam at the Ziggo Dome, queue up at machines to pay for tokens which you exchange for drinks and food. I've not paid for the lav mind.

Very jealous. She's absolutely incredible and Big Thief are one of the very best bands around imo. Seeing them in Sweden later in the year but gutted to be missing out on the solo tour.

Yeah - wondered that about pricing. I’m guessing to make a bit more £
It was all very civilised - no queues to really
Difficult to judge but I did wonder whether all this is to put people off getting hammered.
Lots were drinking but, compared to UK gigs, it was chalk and cheese.
 
I am not sure about charging for the loos but bar tokens works well at the World Darts Championships at Ally Pally.
 
I never realised they had toilets at gigs! I assumed it was just expected to pee into plastic glasses then throw them on stage. You learn something new everyday 😏
 
The Tokens thing seems to push people to buy more than they need or else lose out on change and adds a layer of administration I'd rather do without. How do I know how many tokens I need for the night? What if I'm only going to that event only? The token system will also have overheads too so you're paying extra for that on top. I'd end up with unused tokens sitting in a drawer which benefits them rather than me.

The toilet idea is b***ks, luckily wouldn't be legal over here due to licensing laws on sale of alcohol.

Could be because when people go off to the toilets to do drugs instead of buying drinks, putting the price up of drinks won't stop people going back and forth to the loos to have a line, but charging them each time might, maybe they've realised people are gonna do drugs, you can't stop it but you can make it harder for them and earn a dollar in the act.

Might be worth checking out Nick Hakim then
He is on her album - piano and duets
He was great
