Peg Powler

Yep - there is a folk group with that name. And formerly an art group also, now renamed.
Peg Powler features as a background character in a magic realism sense in the brilliant Ironopolis novel - one of if not THE best novel I have ever read read set on Teesside.
If you think about most folk tales explain natural phenomena and can be warnings to kids. Peg Powler explains the floods that would often devastate the low lands around the river including Yarm and to tell kids don't play by the river.
On the other hand maybe there was a green, sinewy river hag looking to snatch away errant children and lost souls and smuggle them deep beneath the River Tees... Halloween come early every year.

Think I got fixed up with her in the Madison in 1978. Looked wonderful around 2 a/m . Drained me of life and looked very scary at 6 a/.m.
Funnily enough she was saying something very similar to her friend on the phone as I left.
😁
