Pet Insurance- robbing bggrs

Pet insurance is the biggest scam on the insurance spectrum.

We took in a rescue dog in 2018 who had been living in Romania with approximately 25 other dogs. The vets who examined once she arrived in the UK explained she had a full bill of health, good teeth, good bones and muscular strength etc etc etc. They believed that despite being a rescue, she had not lived in neglect and was only slightly malnourished.

Insurance company... "As we cannot guarantee that the dog has had regular check ups, vaccinations or has not suffered any form of injury, we must class this type of dog as high risk, also as her age cannot be confirmed this does not give us confidence that the dog will be scaled against the correct age-criteria" = £85 a month, please.

No thanks, I'll save £85 a month instead and should she have any issues, pay for it through that. We have now had her 4 years and she has had no issues regarding any form of health and looks (no doubt) healthier than she ever has.

My doggo is with Pet Plan. I did lots of research when we got him and this company seemed the best to me and regularly scored high on feedback. He has whole life cover and the premium is just under £20 a month.
He's a 16 month old fully KC registered Labrador with all his hip scores etc. I think there is a huge difference in price for breed, pedigree status etc.

Don’t change if your pet has had to have any treatment for anything no matter how insignificant. If you try to claim they will likely try to link anything to a pre existing condition so they don’t need to pay out no matter how unrelated it is

I kind of agree after having two bengal cats, one who died aged 18 and one who is well in the way to 19. We had them insured for £10 each for a year or two then left it, luckily they only ever needed minor care.

Our two new kittens though we are paying the £45 a month (for both of them, so £45 total, not £90) as I run a large bengal community and interact with many others and I've seen the vet bills for pets that get cancer or get into an accident etc and even though ours are indoor, I know from experience cats are master escape artists.

I've seen £8k vet bills. If I was to put that £45 a month into an account it'd take me 14 years to be able to cover that amount, and assumes no aftercare. Great if nothing happens like we've benefitted from, but having that bill land in your mat isn't going to great for a lot of people, so I'd rather just pay it and know they're covered whatever happens

It really depends though. If you never need it I guess it looks like a scam but about 5 years ago our dog had to go through various tests and treatments over a couple of years and Pet Plan paid out just over £11000 in that time for her treatment. We never had any problems with claiming back every time and all we paid was the £75 excess each year. I really couldn't fault them.

Our Shitzu's insurance has just gone up from £149 to £181. Made no claims. And because he is over 8 years old we now have to pay 20% of any vet fees.
Has anybody any recommendations please?

I think you might struggle switching providers now that your pet is over 8 years old.

Pet insurance doesn't sound like a scam to me.
In this case they were transparent with their conditions, and you quite rightly chose to go a separate route.

Generally insurance works on the laws of probability rather than specifics of an individual case (in this case a vet's diagnosis that the dog was in good health).

Reading the thread there are lots of options so its relatively easy to shop around.
