Phil Foden

The missing place in midfield should go to Mainoo from Man Utd
It's too early for Gareth but i would definitely get him on the plane over someone who offers absolutely no impact off the bench like a Mount or Gallagher.
I'd probably take Barkley and Mainoo over them two plodders. Mix it up, reward the players who are playing week in week out and performing well in the PL - especially if its just squad places, and impacts from the bench anyway.
I'd take Solanke over Rashford at the minute, but if Rashford keeps his head down and finishes the season well he's a far better player and option - that Kilman from Wolves is doing well too as far as centre backs go.

The biggest frustration was Southgate not opting for Jude over Mount, during the Euro's.

It's was so blindly obvious. Mount was a passenger for the most of that tournament and we had someone on the bench (albeit who was young) who was putting teams to the sword in the Champions League.

I remember on here posting, hoping Southgate would see the wood for the trees and play Jude in that final.

Instead, he played Mount who did nothing, yet again.

How Chelsea got 50m+ for him is remarkable to be honest.
Bellingham was 17 and playing in the second tier, and had about 12 games under his belt.

Agree on Mainoo, he' making a topflight impact

Barkleys a no for me. If we are going to stick with yesterdays man, stick with the ones that are already integrated into the squad. We do as a nation need to start to find a bit more talent out of possession, the fact Philips and Henderson are being selected is indicative of how the (dark) art of breaking up play is being lost. Who realistically is coming playing week in, week out in the prem as a defensive midfielder and could take that role. Not shoe horning someone in that's more attacking, someone who can do the 4Ds of defending with ease? CBs too, real lack of talent coming through and a problem looming when Stones retires from England

You should play two holding midfielders z especially if one is Rice who can progress the ball. It gives Bellingham more freedom.
I’m sure France would prefer us to play 2 holding midfielders rather than than an attacking 5 based on the quality of our attacking players

france would rip us to shreds if we have Rice on his own trying to protect our back 4. Sorry it's insanity. It's how brazil played for the period where they failed to win anything. Haarlem Globetrotter football.
Neither Henderson or Phillips are good enough at the moment (if Philips carries on the way he’s doing with West Ham he’ll be lucky to stay in their team never mind Englands). Why do we need 6 defensive players, of which at least 1 will be mediocre?

We could play Rice with Foden and Bellingham sat in front of him (a similar tactic used by City to very good effect), but let’s stick to the 2 holding midfielders and restrict the best part of our team.

Because the defence is so mediocre that we absolutely need to the numbers to make up for the quality

Bellingham, Rice and Foden are good enough and intelligent enough to adapt and play as a 3 against any team. We could comfortably use Bellingham as the ‘2nd defensive midfielder’ alongside Rice with freedom to join the attack with Foden and benefit from having them all on the pitch at the same time. It would certainly be better than having Henderson plodding around trying to keep up with young and mobile opposition players.

Why would you use Bellingham as a CDM 🤦‍♂️ we’ve been here before with Lampard and Gerrard in CM and Scholes on the wing

Such a pity we have a defensive shyte Manager.
Wouldn't be surprised if one of them are sacrificed for Horrenduson

Is he a “defensive shyte“ manager though?
If he’s defensive how come his England teams have broken pretty much every goal scoring records for the National team, going back 150 years?
Most goals in qualifying, most goals in a calendar year, most goals in a World Cup, most goals in the Euros. Beaten those records by a lot in fact.

if he’s “shyte” how come he’s done better than his ten predecessors put together. We won 6 knock out games in 50 years before Southgate. We won 7 in 5 years under Southgate, and reached our first final in about 60 years. That’s after the ten years before he took over when England were absolutely f****ing ****.

Maybe you’d like to get rid of the “defensive shyte” manager and get back to the good old days of attacking footballing geniuses like Capello, Hodgson and Fat Sam. I think you deserve them.

He wouldn’t be a CDM. The game has moved on since those days of fixed roles. It’s easy to throw the Lampard and Gerrard example out but they were in a four man midfield having to cover each other when the other player went forward. Systems are much more fluid these days and having Rice in the CDM role allows the other midfielders to get forward more often. Bellingham would drop back and cover when we lose the ball but have the freedom to join attacks when we do.

No it hasn’t, all players have preferred roles and out of possession it’s really important to know what that is.

It’s easy to throw the Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes conundrum because it’s absolutely true and some fans still haven’t learned. Play people in the roles that are right for them and don’t just put every attacking player on, shoe horned in to try and 5-4 games because against a good side it just will not work.

We don’t want Bellingham to be encumbered with dropping back and covering too much, we want him high up the pitch between the lines making us tick in an attacking sense, like he does at club level. It’s pointless having a world class attacking player and making him waste his talent and energy dropping deep, we’ve been there before

No they wouldn't.

They'd be very happy for Griezmann to have the freedom of the park.
what like at the World Cup you mean, when we had (wait for it cos this will blow your mind) 2 holding midfielders.

We can’t out defend teams, the last 3 tournaments have shown that so why would we try it again?

Foden, Rice and Bellingham are easily intelligent enough footballers to be able to play together without the need for Henderson or Phillips to bail them out.

But anyway it doesn’t matter because we’ll go with the usual holding 2, somehow try and squeeze Bellingham and Foden in to the same position and bring Rashford and Mount or Gallagher on when it doesn’t work.

Won nothing yet no previous manager except arguably Bobby Robson had a more gifted squad.
With the riches he's had available we have massively underperformed.
Nothing less than the final would be acceptable, despite Southgate.

Scholes has gone on record as saying he liked playing for United on the left wing.

He only played on the wing for England in one tournament, and he was crap, but he was crap for England most of the time. As were Lampard/Gerrard regardless of where they played, certainly in the big tournaments. And Rooney.

Most of them from that “golden generation” have since said that the main issue was that the rivalries between the clubs and club managers (Wenger/Ferguson/Mourinho/Benitez) meant that they had no chemistry as people when it came to playing for England.

I’m not disagreeing with your point but, just saying, I think we’ve discovered there was a bit more to it with those lot. Gareth seems to have done a decent job of breaking down club rivalries.
