Planning an Amsterdam trip

I think you mean Scheveningen. That is a great seaside area about 4km from The Hague. Groningen is a city way up North which is very nice but a tw@t to get to.

Thanks, I did mean Groningen; the difficult access is part of the appeal really. I'm not a huge fan of Amsterdam: even without the stags it's pretty crowded and intense. But there's no denying it's handy access to the continent. I was working on the assumption G is quieter?

I enjoy a bit of Euro train travel: accessibility to Germany and lots of Hanseatic architecture is also part of the appeal.

Never been to Rotterdam, but it's on the way to Belgium which, for my money, has some of the most underrated cities in Europe. Might give it, or Scheveningen a look.

Another vote for Rotterdam, and as you mentioned Belgium I'd heavily endorse Liege as well.

Sorry F_H, I was answering to EIOwen; Groningen is well out of the way and a couple of hours train or car. Nice place. Quite industrial. No rowdy crowds or the like !! In NL I would also recommend Breda and Eindhoven. One place I never got to despite living in NL for 5 year was Maastricht. If you are up for touring, the beach towns North of Amsterdam are great places to visit as are the seaside towns like Zandvoort (home of F1 GP) and Noordwijk. If you like a good eurotrip I would strongly advise to visit Bonn. Great place.

I've been to Bonn and quite a few places along the Rhine.
I speak what I think of as "hotel German" (I'm ok in hotels, restaurants, stations and airports as long as the other person says what I expect them to say!), and there have been some great value train offers in recent years.

Going inter rail for about 6 weeks in May June - heading down to Naples then up to Oslo.
Kind of had Munich/Hamburg highlighted for Germany

Bonn better?

I loved Munich, an unexpected stop on my way to Oslo (also great) and in reach of Nuremberg, also interesting. Germany has always been a favourite of mine to visit.
