Players that leave us

I see alot of comments of us being a selling club or not being able to retain our best players but i cant name many that have left and went on to being a great success. Did we get some sales right.

Recently Tav aand Akpom

Previously
Schwarzer alot of appearances after he left
Barmby won 3 cups with Liverpool
Downing successful spell at Villa
De roon playing champions league football

Alot of good players didnt hit the heights, faded away or injuries blighted their careers afterwards
Ravanelli, Ziege, Juninho, Viduka, Traore, Bamford, Johnson, Spence, Tuncay, Woodgate, Ramirez, Randolph, Braithwaite, Emerson, Gibson, Ayala

Obviously some have gone onto better teams had odd seasons in the top leagues but nothing major.

My point for players that leave is the grass isnt always greener... UTB

Johnson won the league and the FA cup after leaving us.

Yakuba or Viduka is maybe the closest equivalent to Akpom.

The both were both proven goalscorers.

I don't think players need unremitting glory to feel leaving was justified.

Ramirez played 4 seasons of top flight football in Italy after leaving us.
Traore, though never going on to be the champions' league player some predicted, has had a decent PL career.
Either of them might take the view that they wouldn't have had even that if they stayed here.

It was certainly in the club's best interest that some of these moved on: Viduka (who I liked far more than either of the 2 I've mentioned above) was a great player, but I have to believe those injury problems would have dogged him if he'd stayed: fairly inevitable for a player of his age and weight.

I don't worry about being a "selling club"; the reality is we're a second tier club. Bosman put all the power in the players' hands, and the vast majority of players will choose top flight football over the second tier. It's nothing to do with the attitude or the mentality of our club.

Traore.

Arguably Gibson (promotion and a season in the Premier League, though that was after the Burnley farce).

De Roon, though he went back to where we signed him from.

Stuani.

Guzan.

But it's not surprising that the list isn't that long, we're a long term Championship club and we don't often have a huge number of academy players in the squad.

Bar this season and Woodgate's, since our relegation in 2009, most additions to our squad have been established players in the middle or latter part of their career, they're not going to get a move to a big club after a mid-table finish with us.

Off the top of my head:-

Downing
Morrison
Johnson
Stuani
Traore
De Roon
Barmby
Schwarzer

All of these went on to have successful careers playing many more years in the prem (or other top flights) and winning a few trophies along the way after leaving boro.

There are probably a few others as well.

Akpom deserves his shot.. right time to move for the player and our club. Hitting his peak right now.. best of luck to him.

a fair few players towards the end of their careers didn't very little else after picking up a big wage packet from us.. injury blighted the 'renegades'

It is a bit strange how few players we've had that have gone on to better things, especially when we were a PL team. We had some great players but not many of them went to play on the champions league.

I think it shows how/why when people say how can a 20 year old with no caps and barely any first team football can be worth £50m. The clubs all know who the very good players are from a young age. The others have to really stand out to get a move to one of the big clubs.

I think Hackney has looked great for us so far but going on history the chances are he never plays PL football and he almost definitely won't play champions league. Hopefully he flips the stats and even better if it's with us.

I completely disagree with the opening poster on this, I think some of our players have gone on to big big things and personally I’m proud of the Boro’s part in that.

I think we grow players who have ‘got it’ at the Boro and find out those who haven’t.

Pallister. Ripley, cooper all went on to play games for england after leaving us. First 2 won the league title

As ever we need to be sensible and recognise who we are and where we are at. Apart from a few years in fhe early to mid 2000s we have been at our historical average which is lower tier top flight / top tier second flight.

We've been blessed with some superb times in our relative recent history and also some pretty awful times. We've witnessed highs and lows and our players have done so too.

Finally we have the right approach and structure. It means a little patience for us supporters but we're looking long term at building a sustainable go and relative success in the top flight and we WILL get there.

Unsurprisingly our players will do the same. Some will leave for better things and achieve it, others will regret the decisions they make.

Long term we hope that we've done the right thing, made the right choices and it's two step forwards, one step back, rinse and repeat.

It's a sensible plan in my mind.
