Playing out from the back

Just watched the inside the match day from Hull. Notice anything about our first goal?

Dieng plays pretty much the same ball to O'brien that he does for Hull's 2nd goal. O'Brien wants it, plays it to Clarke, Engel, Lath goal.

Hull's second O'Brien shows for it but doesn't make it his and they score. I'm not shifting the blame to O'Brien as they both need to be aware that Hull have pushed much higher up the field and are on top at that point and they should be going a bit longer.

It does however highlight the benefits and negatives of playing this way.

No two situations are the same and the video doesn't show the options open to O'Brien before he receives the ball or the distance between him and the nearest Hull player, the camera is too low for a comparison.

So if it worked for the first goal are we expecting Hull not to learn from that and close it down, as they did and thus scoring their goal? We have to be intelligent too.

I think at the time when watching it on tv O'Brien seemed to be open to receiving the ball but either Dieng didn't deliver it with enough pace or he didn't really want it and was on his heels or both. I think a good leader at that point should be aware that tactically Hull have changed things and are pressing higher and we shouldnt have been playing there at that time.

At times, we seem to faff around at the back whilst the rest of both teams players tighten their laces and have tea an biscuits.
Learn to ping the ball out wide to the flanks, so the boys can push on and pose a threat to the opposition. (y)

Even with Hull being more aware of it, it still could have worked with a bit more awareness from O'Brien.

On a side issue, I don't know why, but 'thus' is such an annoying little word.

Playing the ball out should not be a 90 min strategy. Need to mix it up otherwise it is easy enough to counter. Inviting a high press and not using the space it creates is totally bizzare.

Just watched the highlights of the U21s vs Sunderland. About a minute in, we play out from the back using the exact same move we used against Hull when we scored and when we got it wrong. Centre midfielder runs back and lays it off. First two times he didn't have an out ball so it went back to the keeper. Third time we get free with a lovely move ended by a foul. You can see this is our normal routine.

Have to say, I have been really impressed by the snippets I've seen of our keeper: Shea Connor. Think he started in the U18s and has been promoted.
