Private pilots license

Bloomin eck, I didn’t expect it to be so divisive ! I’m still waiting back from Eden at Teesside airport . Hope their email response isn’t as slow as their throttle response

I'm going to do another 'trial' flight soon with Eden. I'm never going to learn to fly but just like going up and pootling along the coast for an hour every now and then. It's great fun taking control and just having a go.

Ok, if you say so, seems a lot different to the accounts of the 200 pilots I've worked with mind, pretty much all of which started with a PPL.

Depends what you mean by decent sized, I'm not talking about landing at Heathrow FFS, just small/ private airfields (suitably sized to tiny aircraft), and I've heard some charge less than £10 (which does seem low), but wouldn't think £100 is unreasonable. It's not like someone is going to want to fly into Manchester and chuck them £5k.

I used Spain as the typical holiday destination of brits, assuming you'd flown there, like most have. But it was more the point of you get a taxi or whatever from your destination, not so much the actual flying there yourself. But no, a little Cessna/ Piper isn't going to get there in one hit, maybe two or three, but of course next to nobody is going to be doing that in a Cessna/ Piper, as the speed/ cost of it would make zero sense.

I'm aware you can't charge people to fly, without the licence, but you can take your family/ colleagues etc. That guy who who was flying Sala didn't have a commercial licence etc, only had a PPL I think, which obviously shouldn't have happened, he didn't have the night ticket either.
I think you have pretty much agreed with all that I have said.
Just to say I never heard of anyone at all flying to Spain from the UK on a ppl in a single engine aircraft Im sure there are some but its certainly not 'most'
To do so under VFR would almost be literally criminal

Can you give me an example of an airfield/airport in Spain you could fly to. I will cost it up for you in monetary terms, The mental cost of the stress may be a bit harder

and you are definitely right - it would make zero sense

I think you misunderstood my first post a bit, but we're on the same level now it seems.

I think some single engine props have ranges up to about 1500 miles, and it's about 1000 miles to Barcelona area (not saying land at Barcelona), but I think it's still probably pushing it as I doubt it would be a direct flight and also probably into a headwind one way at least.....either way it would be a good 7 hour flight, so wouldn't make sense unless doing a bit of a tour with a few stops over a few days.

VFR would probably mean an even longer route, which you couldn't even plan, so you need the IFR licence to even think about it. I think the IFR rating is like another £2,500 for 15 hours or whatever it is, on top of the 45 needed for a PPL (around £7,500) so you could get all that for 10k I think, albeit you'd have to be a madman to try to fly to Spain after 60 hours training! I think that would be something for 2-3 years down the line, but again, a multi stop trip would make much more sense.

No idea about airfields in Spain, not even looked into it, but I expect the costs there might even be cheaper to land than here, but like with anything, being a foreigner they'd likely have your eyes out somewhere, compared to what locals pay. I would hope there would be some forums or websites that could offer some assistance, or the guys at the flight school would have a better idea.

Like I say though, the trip to Spain would be an expensive adventure, but it could be quite handy for UK trips with our local airports not serving the rest of the UK too well, and our rail network being awful/ expensive.

Unless you have your own IFR equipped plane, and I don't think many do. The cost of hiring one to sit on the ground for a week would be horrendous.
A piper cherokee uses a bout 7 gallons of 100LL per hour which equates to about 1000 quid for a Spain round trip in fuel alone.

Maybe a trip to fantasy island would be more befitting

If you're loaded then that's not a lot of money.

Same as if there's 4 of you or whatever, it could cost that on Easyjet, and be a lot less fun.
