I've had my current insulated jacket for about 10 years and it cost me £50. It's done really well, but is way past it's best (it's North Ridge if that helps). It used to be nice and warm, and either has lost some of that ability or I've just got older! Last year when I went to the Lakes it just so happened to coincide with storm Arwen. I was freezing and decided where better to buy a coat? I got one, and it's tremendous, but buying it in those conditions I kind of over-estimated how warm a coat I'd need. Turns out it's too warm. I've not worn it this winter, and have only worn it on one walk since I've got it and a few evening matches. Hence the old coat still in use.
So has anyone got any recommendations for a relatively low-budget winter jacket? On an 1-3 scale of warmth (3 being the warmest), the new coat came in at 3 in the shop I bought it from. I think it's technically a ski jacket so it's really warm. Based on that scale I'd say my current jacket would be a 1 comparatively, and a new jacket that was a 1 nowadays would probably be warmer due to the better technology?
Annoyingly, different companies rate their coats by different scales. And if you pop into a shop to look at the sales items like I did earlier, you then struggle to find any meaningful comparison data on Google. I hate waste so whatever I buy now I'll be stuck with for a few years so want to make sure I get something decent
