Remember Dave Hodgson one of the Ayresome Park aces

Remember him either injured or suspended - ended up with fans in the Holgate.
Imagine that now.(y)
Suspended, FAC tie v WBA, he was sent off the previous week away to Man City & had to sit out the 4th round, going in to the holagte to celebrate with Boro fans

Was just talking about him in the pub in Darlo this afternoon. He's remembered very fondly here.

He was absolutely loved at the Boro.
His last game was actually against Liverpool at Ayresome Park, the final game of our relegation season 81/82.
He was carried off the pitch on fans shoulders as we all knew he was leaving. Very emotional.
It felt very symbolic of the final fall from grace of the club following the Wolves FA Cup QF.

Well liked at the 1st spell, 2nd spell .... well nightmare really , sent of and looked of the pace. Once went to a pools v darlo mat h at pools and for some reason they were sittng on benches opposite the players enterance, he got the lickings of a dog of the crowd but gave as good back. passionate player and manager, used to get in the Central Cafe in Darlo a lot and had a few chats with him . Nice chap
I was at that game , sat on a wooden bench with a couple of others, white shirt , was very animated and could see he cared... I was sat behind him in the stand so was watching him most of the game as he was one of my favs in his first spell. ... Your right he got verbal but never flinched , looked very isolated on that bench about 2 meters from the stand and same of the touchline

how well did the fans rate hodgeson at boro?

did he flop at liverpool or just wasnt world class like the big stars at the time?
No he didn’t flop, it’s just that Liverpool being the only really successful club at the time bought all the good players around the league just to stop other clubs having them. As was said at the time Liverpool’s first team will win the league and their reserves would finish second. Since the creation of the PL and the influx of foreign money other clubs can now do it, but can buy up young kids and ruin their careers as well.

I absolutely loved him. Rapid and wholehearted, excellent unselfish team player. If he could have been a deadly finisher he would have played for England beyond the U21's.
He was such a flop at Liverpool that he won 2 titles and the European Cup in 1984 from the bench in a team that was captained by Graeme Souness and included Craig Johnston the same side.

Thankfully it didn't work our for him at his boyhood club Sunderland and injuries had taken their toll when he came back to us briefly.

He will always be one of my very favourite old players.
My first Boro hero Hodgy

Absolutely smashing bloke.

loved living and playing for Boro, as other have said, very genuine, generous, funny, passionate and good company.

its well known that his team was Sunderland, so no surprise when the opportunity came to sign and play for them he did.

i was in the Tall Trees nightclub over Kirklevington way one Saturday night, must have been circa 1985/6, , Hodgy was playing for Sunderland, but i'd met him quite a few times when he was at Boro, he comes over with this bloke in a double breasted suit !! - sticks a drink in my hand and says "look after him, keep him safe" and nips away towards the dance floor - so i start to engage with this new acquaintance, who as far as i know id never seen or met before, introduce myself, shake a hand and this bloke says in a Southern accent "I'm Dave, Dave Swindlehurst" of course i recognised the name he had been at West Ham but had signed for the mackems - he was only the centre forward at Sunderland, no wonder he needed 'minding' - as it happens he was a decent bloke as well, laughing and light hearted, "never been to this place before - but Hodge said its good hahaha" and 10 mins later Dave Hodgson was back - full of mischief.

good footballer, nice bloke.
