RIP Yosser Hughes (Bernard Hill)

They were only talking about him on BBC Breakfast this morning. I think he's in the 2nd series of Responder which starts tonight.

Anyone old enough to remember him in Boys from the Blackstuff will have loved the time the tarmac crew came to Coulby Newham.

And the 'Shakehands' scene is legendary.

RIP Bernard 🙏

I got the DVD box set of Boys from the Blackstuff just last month and recently watched it. His performance in the episode Yosser's Story should have won him a BAFTA.

"You look like me."
You looked like half my town,
grizzled in the wake of she
who razed it to the ground.

You didn't act like a broken man,
you *were* a broken man,
imprinting his guts
on the mirror in front of us.

So a nod of the head
and an unflinching stare
and a pint of the black stuff
to one who laid the truth out bare.

RIP Bernard, not forgetting the great part he played as Shirley Valentine’s husband.
I mentioned to the wife that he had died and she said we should watch Shirley Valentine later - I love this line out of it and so typical of men of that time.

I like chips and egg on a Tuesday, today is Thursday, Where's my steak?

Boy's from the Blackstuff was brilliant.

RIP
