Rome Travel Advice

My wife and a couple of her pals all turn 40 this year so me and the husbands have said we'll look at sending them away for a long weekend. Mrs Sparky has always fancied going to Rome and so i wondered if anyone has any experiences (good and bad) and recommendations on where to stay etc. Theyd be happy t0 share. Probably don't include experiences of Roma away!

We go in March, never been before

Booked in to here - https://www.romelifehotel.com/

I`m getting my train tickets from the airport to the centre when I get there

Get a 24/48/72hr Roma Pass, either in advance or at the InfoPoint at the airport when you arrive

Taking Euros with me as not gaining much getting over there as only there a couple of days

Went for 3 nights a couple of years ago. Did all the touristy stuff and absolutely loved it.
Not religious but I found the Vatican very uplifting.
Only negatives I heard were the size of the hotel rooms. Ours was smallish but perfectly OK. Few Americans demanding bigger rooms and and not really understanding where they were staying was in the old centre with small streets.
Oh and tell her not to expect anyone to stop at a zebra crossing for her.

I found after about a day if you approach the zebra crossings confidently and just 'went for it' and not look like a lost tourist they'd stop for you. Takes a bit of time to get used to that.

Got the direct train from the airport to Roma Termini station. Was cheap and ideal, our hotel was a 5/10 min walk from there and you are in the centre of a lot of places at that point.

The touristy stuff is great. Colosseum and Roman Forum tour is one of the best things I've done. Drinks are expensive all over the city. We found though that wherever you stopped for drinks they came out with little snacks, sandwiches, gnocchi, crisps, etc

I’ve been twice

Took the bus to st calixtus catacombs following a recommendation on here which was worth doing..

The capuchin crypt (bone chapel) is an interesting experiance as well.

We did the tour of Vatican museums before it opened to the public and it was worth it for it being less busy. When we did the coliseum, we did the tour with the third tier and underground which was good. Went to the top of the 'wedding cake' building and the view was brilliant. Castel St'angelo tour including secret passage was great. St Peters basilica is stunning inside.

We went to a Lazio match at the Stadio Olimpico and loved that...sat next to their ultras and they're a bit mental. We got the train out to Ostia Antica to see the Roman remains there and loved that too.

If you can, go to Trastevere for food one night. Proper Italian atmosphere, less touristy when we were there compared to other areas and food was lush! Oh and there's the view over the city through the keyhole which is beautiful too. It's an amazing city! Obvs Trevi fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona etc too!
