I bet they were.

A truly historic visit non the less.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has confirmed the presidential delegation did notify Russia about President Biden's trip to Kyiv.

The trip had been in the works for a few months, but a "go" decision was made on Friday.

The White House let the Russians know of the trip a few hours before departure on Sunday morning.

I wonder if it was a 'notification' or clear warning that were a missile to land in Kyiv while a 'senior diplomat' was there, then there would be a rather large punch in the face en route to Russian territory.
By the sounds of it the White House told them
Straight the us president is going to be here at this time make sure nothing happens or face the consequences.

He travelled by train

There had been widespread speculation among the press corps that President Biden might be planning a trip to Kyiv. Yet today's visit still took everyone completely by surprise.

According to the White House schedule issued yesterday, Biden was due to fly to Warsaw later tonight.

There were two suspiciously lengthy gaps in the itinerary of his two-day trip to Poland and we wondered if that might be when he would slip into Ukraine. Instead, journalists in Washington woke up to find the trip had already happened.

Air Force One took off at 04.15 EST (09.15 GMT) on Sunday. The small pool of reporters travelling with the president were sworn to secrecy and not allowed to report the trip until after his arrival. BBC teams in Kyiv had noticed increased security measures around the city, but did not know for sure who was due to visit.

The White House has now confirmed that President Biden made a 10-hour train journey. As Kyiv from Poland, as air travel is not safe in the war zone

Fair play to the US, it's a good move, and that's a big mental win over Russia too.

Russia wouldn't have the bottle to do anything, and this proved it, and if they did try anything, it likely would have been taken out via air defence anyway and would have given Biden more support in the US to increase their support to Ukraine. Even if anything was coming through, they would have had Biden in a bunker in no time, so he would have been fine anyway.

A win-win scenario, probably been planned for a while to be super safe.

I know people joke about Biden's age and his cognitive abilities, but he's far from daft. I think the achievements in the first 2 years of the presidency only highlight that and underline what a numpty Trump really was.
I'm sure Biden's not daft. He's just senile and should be nowhere near being president of the USA. It's quite frightening after seeing some of his gaffes and mumblings over the last couple of years. Why does the USA mostly have crap presidential candidates? Where's the younger folks who are in their prime?

Same reason we have younger PMs who are crap anyway.

It apparently has been in the planning for months but it was only on Friday night they decided to go for it.

I guess Jill Biden visit last year was the dry run.

Some people just also aren't great in front of camera's like for speeches, or working on the fly responding to questions, what's more important is decision-making after having time to assess. It's odd to picka president who isn't that great in front of camera though, as loads of people will put more weight on that, than actual policies.

See Trump was quite a good speaker, and cleary confident, waaaay too overconfident that he just talked absolute crap, but he was just as bad with his decision-making/ policies, quite similar to BJ here.

I wonder if Biden knows there's a war going on in Ukraine?
He probably thinks the Ukraine is in Russia itself.
Or even Australia.

Kiev can't be that dangerous of a part of the world when world leaders are visiting every week in suits and ties whereas Zelinsky is in his green jumper and cargo pants. Didn't see this many world leaders visiting Baghdad or Helmand province.

Your the advisor of a world leader. Do you advise your leader it's a good idea to go to a country's capital city under random and sporadic attacks from another country ran by a mental case?

I don't ever recall Bush taking a tour of Kabul during his war against terror or Blair strolling through the streets of Basra.
