The flight fears thread has bizarrely got me wanting to travel ASAP.

One place I've wanted to go is San Sabastian, I've never been to mainland Spain but I've seen SS on a few foodie programs and it appeals.

Anyone been? Looks like it would be a short flight and make a good spot for me and Mrs Jostler to pass the child to the grandparents Friday Lunch time and travel for 2-3 nights?

I have it’s great for foodies lots of pintos, probably spealt wrong but basically tapas. I stayed at a nice hotel overlooking the beach, there’s a little cable car a bit like the one in salt burn that takes you down from the hotel then you walk along the beach to the town. Lovely place for couples and some great food

Its a great little town with a nice atmosphere (lots of Aussies and Irish and what not in summer, not quite so many Brits). Fairly touristy but nice. Good pintxos and bars, even has a casino if you want to stop out late :)

The thought of strolling around town popping into the various bars for some pintos and a glass of wine sounds like a great break to me. Do you have a link to the hotel you stayed in? The Mrs' birthday is in August, so hopefully can put together a provisional plan by then and we can hopefully travel.

Edit - Cheers for the link!

A brilliant place to visit, but not sure if I would want to spend more than a few days there though. Like FatCat said, pintxos are excellent and so much choice. We went from bar to bar eating and drinking and I must have put on a stone whilst there.

You want to stay in a Pension near the old town and then you are handy for everything.

Edit: On the twice we've been it was a spare of the moment thing and lucky to get booked up. We drove down from France and ended up staying about a ten minute walk from the old town. A lot of the hotels and Pensions have free parking in the long stay car parks.

We've not been but it's certainly on the list. Only downside is that i don't think there's flights from the local airports.
There's lots of great places to visit in mainland Spain and is definitely one of the top destinations for food lovers. Northern Costa Brava is another short flight (Girona) to a good food region with great scenery (area around Begur, Llafranc etc)

San Sebastian is a wonderful place. As everyone else has mentioned the food is something else. A Pintxos tour is a must.

A little hint a couple of locals told me. If you really like a dish when you eat in a pintxos bar you're supposed to throw your napkin on the floor. Go to the bars with the most napkins on the floor. They have the best food.

My fave pintxos bar is a little bit poncey but it's very different. It's called a fuera negro. "The black fire" it has some interesting creations but the food is spot on and the wine is cheap.

We loved it, there's a nice walk up to the Christ statue on the hill. We always found ourselves eating in empty restaurants since the locals don't turn up to eat until about 10 pm when they get crowded. I can really recommend the Spider Crab, a local speciality freshly caught in UK waters!

Don’t, however go for a tour of Real Sociedads ground. It looks great on TV but it’s a bit crumbly and rubbish when you get shown around

I think it's been completely rebuilt hasn't it a few seasons back? Not that i'd bother going mind
Oh then ignore me! But yes the stadium and the coach station are right at the back of the town. Unless you're catching a bus there no real point in checking out the stadium

I've been organised here, and messaged the MiL for their childminding services for the Friday - Monday.
You will need to get into serious training and take shorts with an elasticated waist band for that extra piece of pintxos you will have. I was having to loosen buttons. ;)

@FatCat ive just had a look through the hotels pics, some very impressive views. How long is the walk from the hotel to the town would you say?

The hotel that FatCat posted is in a really good position for the beach but it is a good walk from the old town. It will be a nice walk though along the promenade but would take you 30 to 45 minutes or 20 mins in a taxi.

I would look at the Pensions in the Old Town - I had these recommended on here and they are like an upmarket B&B / 3 star hotel. Both we stayed in were spotless.

There are loads of them on the link below but go through TripAdvisor for reviews - The one highlighted got really good views.

The wife is looking at the Pension Casa Nicolsa and asked if I fancy booking it for August. When on holiday, we stay up the coast in France around an hour away.
