I know a lot of people hate this but Hitsville UK is a masterful pop song...

No expense accounts, or lunch discounts or hyping up the charts
The band went in and knocked them dead in 2 minutes 59
I love this one. You’re right, it’s a fantastic pop song.

It’s a shame Mick’s vocals aren’t just a tiny bit higher in the mix. But that’s nitpicking.

My favourite Clash album and the Tymon Dogg track Lose This Skin is pure magic
Funnily enough that’s the song I’m most likely to skip. I think the song itself is pretty decent and Topper’s drums make it but I can’t stand his voice. I’ve pretended that I like it but it just doesn’t wash.

Side note - do you know that he and Stummer used to be fellow buskers and JS apparently bumped into him on NY and invited him to record the song for the LP.

He also makes a few appearances on some of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros’ tunes.

Ok , played the full six sides again today whilst lounging in my hammock and it makes you feel in a special private club ... it really makes you listen on the 2nd time as you know theres no real surprises ... warming to it

read this somewhere ......When CBS learned of The Clash’s desire to release a three double album, executives almost died. To ensure fans were able to buy the album, the band demanded the album was sold for the price of one. The record company caved, under the condition that the band would forgo royalties on all album sales below 200,000 copies in the UK and a 50% decrease in royalty payments outside of the UK. The band complied and to this day hasn’t earned a single penny from the more than 100,000 sales in the UK.

and this ......

One More Dub is a dub version of One More Time
Broadway
outro contains The Guns Of Brixton (stemming from double album London Calling) sung by Maria Gallagher
Mensforth Hill is Something About England played backwards with overdubs
Living in Fame is a dub version of If Music Could Talk
Silicone on Sapphire
is a dub version of Washington Bullets
Version Pardner
is a dub version of Junco Partner
Shepherds Delight
is a dub version of Police & Thieves (stemming from debut album The Clash

I’ve been away on holiday this week and have enjoyed having this thread to refer back and forth to.

I wasn’t actually aware there were so many folk on here that held the LP with as much high regard that I did. I honestly thought I was a bit of an outsider 😂

I can’t wait to get home and listen to it in full. Somebody earlier mentioned ‘Washington Bullets’ - that’s actually a good shout for best song on the album. I remember a writer saying it was the tune that was “the whole essence” of the album and “brought it together”. Something along those lines.

Thinking of the lyrics brings a tear to my eye even now, and I love the backing harmonies of “Sandinista”. It’s so subtle and also unpretentious how they used that to tie in with the album title.

I think that makes sense..??

Sandinista Now! Sampler

Prior to the Sandinista! release in the US a single vinyl was pressed for use on the radio. It was released by Epic and contained 12 of the 36 songs and was given the title Sandinista Now!, and contained the songs:

  • Police On My Back
  • Somebody Got Murdered
  • The Call Up
  • Washington Bullets
  • Ivan Meets GI Joe
  • Hitsville UK
  • Up In Heaven (Not Only Here)
  • The Magnificent Seven
  • The Leader
  • Junco Partner
  • One More Time
  • The Sound Of Sinners
The release is very rare and, therefore, extremely expensive.

I think it's because the song's so unexpected on first playing and so unlike the Clash, but it's pure alchemy. Martin Scorsese said of it "It was in New York. I had speakers the size of a wall…They [The Clash] came into my apartment and shoved a tape into my machine. It was ‘Lose This Skin’…suddenly thunder and lightening erupted all over the city…it was one of those great moments…all the forces came down into that room.” I've got a couple of TD albums and there's a few tracks that could have been Clashed up .Here's a snippet of his Clash-less version of Lose his Skin

Going off on a tangent a bit but when you bought an album in the 70s and 80s and payed your fiver or whatever it was you would work at liking it and keep on playing it until really got to know it and also to try and get your moneys worth, now when you can stream endless albums so easily and cheaply they don't mean so much and it is much easier to give up on an album if you don't like it immediately

You can't skin up on the back of an Mp3

I thought it was absolutely terrible at the time which is why my vinyl copy is still pristine to this day
I've only listened to it all the way through once. I tend to delve in and out on Spotify.

Frazza, if you still have the LP and you're looking to offload it, I'll happily take it off your hands :)

The reason I say this is I'm a huge punk fan (mainly early British punk but also the UK82 punk).

I've just started collecting vinyl again and have limited it to ska and punk. I've got a few Clash / GBH / UK Subs records etc. I'd love a copy of 'Sandinista!' in my collection.

I came back from holiday recently and found an original pressing of 'London Calling' waiting for me on my desk. I was over the moon and took me three or four days to find out who had bought it for me! Would happily come and take 'Sandinista!' for the price of a pint if you don't enjoy it.
