Schwarzer dropped?

What's Schwarzer on about here? I can't recall him getting dropped by McClaren and then winning his place back. In 2005-06 his understudy was Brad Jones wasn't it so no way would he be preferred to Schwarzer?

The only times I rceall him being out the team was when Crossley filled in when he was injured a few seasons earlier but he came straight back into the team when he was fit again (controversially as Crosssley had performed so well). And also when Dean Ashton broke his cheekbone in the FA Cup semi but, again, he came straight back in (even though he still needed a protective mask).

Or am I getting confused?

That'll be the clause he had in his contract that stipulated he must be played.

We had to play him otherwise we'd have needed to use the Vikdua insurance money to pay him compensation.

I think he's got his year confused and he means 2001-02 as that is when Crissley came in and was the only time he was under any great pressure

Jones played 16 games that season including 9 in the PL.

A quick look at the time period Schwarzer references indicate he was on the bench for 2 games in January 2006 - a 7-0 shellacking at Arsenal and a 2-3 loss at home to Wigan. So yes it appears he was dropped for Brad Jones, who let in 10 goals in 2 games.
Wow. Poor Brad. Good decision Steve.

He put in a transfer request in 2006 because he was dropped for Jones in the FA Cup, and then he was obviously dropped in other games too.
Must have been a dream of his to play at Nuneaton.

We broke the record that season for most games in a season at 64 (it has since been beaten). There was a lot of rotation, especially towards the end where we were playing replays in the FA cup and two legged UEFA cup games. We only really saw our first team in the big cup games by that point. Schwarzer's injury in the FA Cup semi meant he missed a few through injury towards the end of the season.

Went to that Arsenal game. Heard the team (full of kids) in the pub and that Rob Styles was the ref and nearly didn't bother. No Schwarzer, Queudrue, Ehiogu, Southgate, Pogatetz, Boateng, Parlour, JFH (although Yak and Viduka started) or Downing

Left after an hour when the 5th went in and was shown the way out by the stewards through what appeared to be someones house and got the earlier train back. The most men v boys game I've ever attended. Certainly the most out of its depth defensively.

it really shouldn't have been controversial, Schwartzer was the consummate pro and one of the best keepers in the league at that time. I remember it well, and having debates with people who wanted Crossley to stay in the side which was insane.

I seem to remember a time when he was injured, Mark Crossley came in, and Crossley was brilliant to be fair, but as soon as Schwarzer was fit, he was straight in the team. The fans didn't appreciate that, but looking back, Schwarzer was head and shoulders above Crossley as a GK, so McClaren's decision was probably correct.

So other than the time when Jones was playing, I think he was #1, throughout his whole time, here.

In sure crossley kept something like 10 clean sheets in 12 games.

That will be match where Steve McClaren made his “red cards change games” comment in the post-match interview. We were already 6-0 down when Doriva was sent off in the 73rd minute.

Schwarzer was the best keeper since Jim Platt. He still outranks anything we have had since he left. Outrageous decision to drop him, he was outstanding commanding his area, people used to moan at his kicking, but we had Brad Jones who flapped more than the flags on the stadium roof on a breezy day
