I suppose it's in the same way a player redeems himself if he scores an equaliser after conceding an own goal. It restores the status quo.

Billy Gilmour is a real talent. He is at the wrong club on loan for his development. He needs to be in a team that has plenty of possession and attacking ability. Norwich dropped him the other week to play an extra defensive mid. Wrong club.

Absolutely right. If Dykes had scored the penalty it would have been a comfortable win. Footballers can't "redeem" themselves by doing what they are supposed to do.

If a goalie lets a dolly shot go through his hands into the net, then makes 10 brilliant saves but the team loses 1-0, do the brilliant saves redeem him? No of course not. If he'd saved it the team wouldn't have lost.

Oh it’s a pretty banal thing for a commentator to say. They talk waffle throughout. Matterface last night “Kane was not on the scoresheet”. Er no Sam he wasn’t. That’s because he sat his **** on the bench throughout the game.
