Se7en (Pitt/Freeman)

I watched Se7en again this week, this first time for quite a while and saw it very differently to previously.

So what we have is Somerset retiring but a murderer begins killing as per the 7 deadly sins exactly 7 days before he is going to retire, quite a coincidence. Somerset was paid by the photographer (John Doe) to lead him to the crime scene, he admitted this to Mills. John Doe sees Somerset at the police station and says 'oh I know you' to him. John Doe also tells Mills later in the film that it was information from a police officer that led him to his house and in particular to his wife, did Somerset guide him to Mills' wife? John Doe and Somerset seem to have very similar thoughts about sins and apathy, they speak almost the same.

Somerset almost had the perfect life, almost got married and almost had a baby. Does he in fact have the sin of 'envy' about the life Mills and his Tracy are creating? He seems intent on filling Tracy's head with negativity about the city and a toxic world in which to raise a baby.

My shocking reveal and disagree if you wish is that Somerset is schizophrenic and John Doe is actually his evil alter ego. Afterall, didn't David Fincher do the very same thing with the two main characters in Fight Club?

Somerset is the killer and the film is from his insane point of view. The line from Mills seems to support this: " I've been trying to figure something in my head, and maybe you can help me out, yeah? When a person is insane, as you clearly are, do you know that you're insane?"
