Slash

That guitar solo in November Rain sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. No more so than at Glasto at the weekend.

Struck by the Coatham listings that came up relating to another thread, Gordon Giltrap and Nils Lofgren are two of the greatest guitarists I've seen live. In Redcar.

Rory Gallagher needs shouting out here.
Taken before his time.

Not to mention Joe Bonamassa

Just to add I believe Slash has cited Rory as his inspiration.

The old days rumour goes something like this when asked what it felt like being the greatest guitarist in the world Jimmy Hendrix said 'You will have to ask Rory'.

Before “Leaving Neverland” I used to listen to Give In To Me sometimes on a loop just daydreaming about making my guitar sound like that. I did it fairly regularly but can remember doing it as far back as 1992 before I even played the guitar.

For me the "greatest guitarist" question is a bit too subjective. But yea Slash was absolutely amazing wasn't he.

I've been a massive GnR fan all my life and while Axls vocals have been getting some stick they continue to put on great shows, Saturday absolutely included.

Interesting what you say about his mic issues just been a TV thing, glad it sounded better for real.

A poster in the Galsto thread hit the nail on the head - it's much easier for slash to maintain a high level on a guitar than it is for Axl with vocals. People just need to apprecite that fact.
As my wife said when we watched it last night……..the instruments don’t age.

One my oldest friends, who spent years on the road and in studios, working with a huge amount of artists. He’s not a person to gave out compliments, he’s seen all the BS the industry churns out, but out of all of them he reckons Prince was a genius. Especially in the studio.
Apparently Eric Clapton was asked what it was like to be known as the the best guitarist in the world and he replied……”I don’t know you’d better ask Prince”.

I wasn't impressed with GNR but the vocals on the TV were a big problem. Debbie Harry had similar issues.

Slash was and always has been very impressive, but this thread will probably become a list of relatively obscure names because most people won't want to admit that its Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page.
Joe satriani. To be honest I have seen flamenco guitarists that are better than slash.

My favourite two axe wielders are John Squire and David Gilmore, I'm not going to enter the debate on the greatest or iconic as this is very subjective and personal taste.
*On a side note my favourite guitar is Trigger, it amazes me that it can still make a sound. I have watched videos on its repair and maintenance. For me that guitar is such a symbol of ageing, and how scars(internally and externally) and signs of aging are what makes things or people unique and tells a story of a life lived.
