Souness telling us how big Sunderland are

Nothing poor about his comments, factually correct even if we don't care for them.
They're a big club and definitely bigger than us, but there are only a handful of English clubs who should be described as "enormous".

Sunderland wouldn't even make it into the top 10 for me if somebody ranked each English club in terms of size.

There is no grounding for them to be definitely bigger than us. I honestly don't get it. They only thing they definitely have on us is serially underachieving.

They've had 86 seasons in the top flight, we've had 61.

They've won the old first division six times, we've never won it.

They've won 2 Fa cups, we've won 1 League cup.

Their historical average attendance is 26k, ours is 19k.

We can at least say we've played in Europe, something they haven't achieved, but as much as I hate to say it, if we're comparing our overall history with theirs, surely we have to accept that they're bigger.

None of this matters. If an oil rich country buys Tranmere and chucks in a few hundred million quid, then in a few years Tranmere would be in the Prem'. If the Man City backers get bored and stop splurging money, then they would be relegated eventually. Its meaningless.

I have no idea what 'big' means if i am being brutally honest when used in regard to the status of a football club if the qualification criteria for 'big' is to win trophies

Sunderlands last league win is approaching 100 years ago, if i built a time machine and travelled back 100 years i would agree Sunderland were a 'big' football club

If your counting historical records and using attendances as a marker sunderland are at 25 k, Boro 19K with a 6k Delta

Financially Sunderland are not even contenders

So what is the measure that is being used, obviously all time records, like saying Nokia is a huge player in the phone market because they used to be a huge player in the phone market

There are far Bigger clubs as an example in the german 2nd division with bigger crowds and more recent history who nobody associates with their massiveness as league
performance is the only relevant marker for success in reality

I think there's many factors that need to be considered when determining the size of a club.

Trophies, attendances, years spent in the top flight, qualification for Europe.

Sunderland can't compete financially with Bournemouth presently, but surely you can't say that Bournemouth are a bigger club. It should go on club history in my opinion.
