South Gare

Been years since I've been and I remember that it was/is a private road to get there.

Anyone know if you can still get along to the lighthouse without any need of a pass or anything?

I believe you can , last few times I’ve been there I’ve negotiated the fence and had no bother getting down to the end and there’s often fishermen there . There’s flood warnings around estuaries presently as It’s high Spring tide time so might be worthwhile with waves/spray !

Just as an afterthought it may be noteworthy that not too far back a fisherman was down there and got swept over . Consequently council/port may be prickly about it now so I’d hold your horses until a few other posters have a say . Couple of useful comments on attached article

The road leading to the South Gare is private, but you don't need a pass. Its a public right of way. There are people travelling up and down it everyday. I pop down there at least 3 times a week to walk the dogs, and have done for donkeys years.

It's just the last bit of the Gare that's newly fenced off by the owners. It's a shame because I used to like going right down to the end where fishermen go. Having said that there are obviously ways to get onto the last section, I've not been there myself, but I've seen people wandering along it.

Never needed a pass, got moved on fishing last year but very friendly asked to leave, people back fishing a hour later.
Always plenty of people down there

What type of fish are caught off the end of the gare?

Just be careful of the potholed road. Theres a hell of a hole, filled with housebricks, that becomes submerged under a big puddle after heavy rain. Hit it and you'll be looking at a buckled wheel, a ripped tyre, and a useless tyre inflation kit at the side of the road, in freezing cold side winds, then limping the car to the nearest tyre repair place, Kwik Fit in Redcar, who wont have the right size tyre in stock and you'll be left car-less for 2 days.

That much bad luck can not earthly happen to anyone surely Sammy ....................or perhaps to muster that much detail - it did 😖

It's easy enough to walk on the beach side of it and the climb up onto the walkway, about 3 ft high

You can’t get to the lighthouse at the minute. There’s heras fencing up to stop people going down there.

My Dad took me and my sister down there in 1956 when I was 5, to see the Royal Yacht Britannia leave with the Queen on board, after her visit to Mbro. One of them things that sticks in your memory. It all seemed very bleak to me. Only went back 55 years later to show my daughter the river and the steelworks,( still working then)

The beach from Redcar Pier to the gare is fantastic , and should be developed so it gets used more.
But a large part of the attraction (certainly for me) is that it's relatively deserted once you get past the cables from the wind-farm. Although it'd actually be pretty difficult to do too much damage with development due to the golf course.

Probably the only thing missing is a regular shuttle bus from Majuba Rd car park to the gare. Then people could wander back one-way which is less of a chore.

We used to walk from the Coatham car park to the Gare and back until someone nicked my car.

I've never tried it since and whenever I've been to the Gare since it has been in the car and that has not been often
