South Gare

Concrete Dreams

I went down to the South Gare with my little lad yesterday as a change of scenery. It was somewhere I was taken as a kid and have very happy memories of it. He loved watching the massive ships coming and going and exploring the dunes and beach. He was fascinated by the old blast.

However, it was really sad to see that someone had stolen the metal information signs about the gun emplacement and the view over the Tees. One other issue was the appalling litter, including Stockton Council branded rubbish bags dumped on the beach.

Is nothing sacred. It's a disgrace the way people treat the Gare. Just seems to be a dumping ground because it's out of sight. I love going down looking for decent drift wood for making things. Simple cheap covert cameras and hefty fines with EG coverage should be enough to deter mindless idiots.

also went down yesterday, the rubbish down there is awful, though its no excuse, tgeres not a single bin to be seen

It is one of my favourite place on Teesside. I was against the turbines, but now feel they add something. The view out over to Huntcliff is second to non and when the Mackerel are in and you are competing against the seals to land your catch, waht could be better.

Regarding the litter.

I took a group of kids down there and had to retreat gracefully away from the beach due to the number of used dog crap bags scattered near the steps.

This is not aimed at the majority of responsible dog owners, but the lazy ones who decided to discard there dogs mess that they have bagged up. What is so hard about taking this away with you. You have done the hard part, now take it away and dispose of it properly or leave it to decompose - plastic bags don't do that.

Rant over

They will be needingd the services of the RSPB Saltholme again who at the start of the year put together a litter picker task force of volunteers to clear the area. They picked 600 kilos of rubbish off the beach. Why are people so thoughtless and lazy and no pride in the area they live in? Its so sad to see it back like that again.

It suffers from its abandonment unfortunately. Is the ownership and rights of access to be returned to the council as part of the steelworks site acquisition?

Has the owner continued to assert the privacy of the land by closing access once year as they used to?

If so then maybe parking charges should be introduced to pay for bins and general upkeep.

I thought the Port Authority owned it?

I walked to it last month, I was shocked by the sheer number of bags of dog muck piled up by the stairs.

Some right scruffy b***ds about, it would have been better if they'd just left it where it lay after the dog was done.
But they're only encouraged to leave it there by the pile up.

It could be a nice area if it was treated properly.

The dog shight bags have been an issue there for years. I guess that whoever owns it won't do the litter thing. I remember someone telling me that the road is still private and they close it once a year to keep it from becoming a public "right of way".

As a dog owner I confess that if my dog craps on the tidal part of the beach well away from the steps I will simply bury it, it will be gone with the next tide, if it is near the steps or among the dunes, I will bag it and take it home (or if I'm going into Redcar drop it in the first bin I see).

Once the site is cleared with the old blast furnace gone it could be made into a pretty spectacular re-wilded area.

When will the blast furnace be demolished? They should preserve it in situ or re-erect it in a town centre location.

The problem with the Gare is that you have something that is seen as an amenity by the public, but which the public have no ownership of. Get onto your local MPs whilst there is still some interest in the NE.

Cycled there last month, found it fascinating with all the old redundant history & ships goinmg along their business, which we get in to our place

Certain people will always be selfish, as they'll leave the mes, whether droppings, or litter & walk away, because at the end of the day it doesnt affect them

I haven't been in years.
Last time I went you couldn't walk past the lighthouse bit (at least I couldn't see if you could) because there was a locked fence going across? Can you now actually walk right up to the end?
