Steffen Comments

I think he'll be here next season.
We haven't had a keeper be our number one for 2 consecutive seasons since Randolph.
The football we like to play suits him down to the ground, he's clearly settled here and loving it.
If we do go up we'll have no problem affording anything, likelihood is as well he knows unless he goes to a poor league where they have riches he's gonna have to take a pay cut to play for a good team realistically.

If Carrick and Scott decide he's the man between our sticks for the next few years I'll be extremely happy

Don't think any premiership team would pay the wages he is on. I also think if he went to a premiership club, he would be a back up keeper again, and he wants to be a Number 1.

Steffen knows he's not going to break into the Man city team, so if he has ambition and wants regular football (unlike Randolph), he has no choice but move on, and massively reducing his inflated wages, to attract suitors.

I mean it makes sense. He's never going to be their first choice keeper, he is going to want to play international as much as possible so needs first team football.

Stumbling block will be be will be on city level wages
Yep. I think it's likely we'll end up signing him (and I'll be happy if we do) but if we don't it'll be because of the wages.

Keen to play is the key. I'm not sure many prem sides would see him as an automatic first choice.

He's come good for us, but he's had his issues and those goals he conceded in the cup for City will stick in the mind for a lot of people. He's probably got a mixed reputation outside of the club, wouldn't expect fierce competition for his signature. Which is good for us I think.

Stumbling block for any non premier league club. Would there be interest from any other PL club as a no1? I doubt it, so another championship loan is more likely.

For Steffen to sign for us permanently, it needs all sides to be realistic and make concessions regarding wages.

City will need to contribute part of his salary, Boro will need to pay big money if they really want him and Steffen will need to realise just because he convinced someone to pay him 80k a week once, doesn't mean he will always command that level of wages!

I'm sure it's more a case of city have told him and his agent to look for a new club.

I think it's highly unlikely we will sign him. He's on 80k a week and I imagine in excess of 10mil+ to sign. I actually no real idea about his 'value'.

I guess maybe if we get promoted. It's not going to happen if we don't. He's become very important as to how we set up under Carrick. Just like Giles and now Archer. You'd think we are looking how to fill all 3 positions longterm. Again made harder as probably division dependent.

I wasn't convinced, still not 100% convinced (but then, when are you ever...) - however I am now firmly in the camp of I would like to keep him

It's hard to deny that he is a big part of how we play, and that is the modern way of playing - the GK starts the play. It's high risk, but as we are seeing at the moment, high reward.

He has the occasional howler in him, in terms of his distribution, but his actual goalkeeping is pretty decent.

If we considered that we would want to replace him with a goalkeeper that could play in a similar fashion - are there any better that we could realistically get, even if we are promoted?

Wages obviously the issue

Reported £80k a week. It might not be accurate. A lot might be heavily performance/appearance related too. He'll be on a lot either way, but there are ways and means. As said above, City subsidising his wages, buy outs etc. I'm not saying it'd be easy but players do move from the prem to the championship. It's possible.

No chance he's going for £10m either. He wasn't even in the US squad for the World cup, barely had a kick in the premier League and has had a good, rather than outstanding season in the championship. £5m at the most (IMO of course).

Can't see anyone being interested in paying any more than that.

Like somebody previously said, there’ll have to be some concessions on both sides.

In reality, any interested PL teams aren’t going to pay him 80k a week either, so if he wants to move for first team football, he’ll likely need to take a pay cut.

Whether that cut then makes him affordable for us will depend on which league we’re in I’d imagine.

He has frustrated me at times this season with silly errors and some goals where he could have done better, but overall I still think he’s a good keeper. He’s been much better for the last 4-6 weeks and hopefully that development will continue.

I’d definitely like to see him back here on a Permanent basis if the we could make the deal work financially.

Tricky one i think he would be horribly
exposed as at premier league level hes just not that standard. He is a reasonable keeper in the championship but his ability with his feet is overstated, it seems to be more important than his goalkeeping ability to many. I think we could find better value elsewhere at championship level and at premier league level hes just not good enough.

I very much doubt hes on the hit list of any premier league side

I am very much in a minority it seems. The best I can say (sorry) is he has done ok in the last few games tbf, steady away. He has undoubtedly improved of late, made some valuable saves at crucial times, defending set pieces/crosses is still an issue though and despite everyone gushing over his distribution, it needs improvement still imho. I get all keepers, (even Allison and Ederson etc) mess up, and the style, whoever was in goal, will create some heart stopping moments passing out at the back, and, sometimes the outfield players are not always switched on 100% making the keeper appear silly the odd time.

The form of the team can not be denied however and he has played his full part in that success, results and scorelines are as much down to the team as a whole rather than due to any individual, I still think if we go up, we could maybe do better (Henderson for me), but despite my continuing doubts, he will always have my in game support and, were we to sign him as a permanent no 1, I hope he eventually then finally convinces me and makes me eat my words.

It’s mad how many goalkeepers we’ve had deemed ‘not good enough’ by supporters. In my lifetime, only Pears, Schwarzer, Given and Randolph have been considered ‘good enough’ to be our No1. But Pears and Schwarzer were both still heavily criticised - both for their kicking more than anything else.

Maybe this is just what goalkeepers are. Every single one will make a mistake, drop a cross, give the ball away, be beaten at his near post, fumble one into the bottom corner. The ones who make the fewest errors play for the biggest, wealthiest clubs already. Some are obviously much better than others but Steffen is a perfectly good goalkeeper for Boro. In fact he’s a very good goalkeeper for us.

I might get pelters for this but I think the merits of goalkeeping is probably the most ill-informed discussion in football. Even more than officiating. It’s a specialist position and there are so few goalkeepers employed by the media to talk specifically about it. There was an interview with Buffon a few years back where he said the discourse around goalkeeping was and is just completely laughable. And I’d be inclined to agree.

Zack Steffen? I’d sign him to tomorrow if it was up to me. He’s been very good for us across the piece.
