Subbuteo or Super Striker?

Curling your winger to get behind a full back and clip the ball into a crossing position - very satisfying. You didn’t get that with Striker.

I had a bizarre Spanish version of Super Striker which had a big plastic stand around the pitch which I think was meant to be some knock off version of the Camp Nou. God knows where my parents sourced that from.

I enjoyed Subutteo too but never actually owned it but a few mates did and I always enjoyed a game. I preferred playing with my slightly posher mate who had the pitch glued to a piece of chipboard so the pitch was like Wembley, rather than another mate who unfolded the pitch out the box each time and you usually ended up contending with the creases (it was clearly the equivalent of playing at Plough Lane and was a great leveller).

However, as posted above Tomy Super Cup Football was the b*llocks. The end of term day at Primary school when you could take toys in for the day turned into a giant impromptu footy tournament that lasted all day, quality (just don't lose the bloody tiny footballs!).

We had both Subbuteo, Super Striker and also Bobby Charlton's Casdons Soccer.

We had all 3 of them too.

Loved the diving keepers on Super Striker and one of the blue players we had, had a turned in leg which meant the ball flew at 45 degrees to where you’d expect it to go, so you had to adjust your aim accordingly.

With Subbuteo I used to love going to Bill Gates sports shop and looking through the various teams to buy one whose kit I liked. Hamilton Academicals, Haarlem and obviously the classic 70’s boro kit I remember buying.

Similar to you, my brother and I would go to Reed's Sports in South Bank and buy a new team with Christmas money we would get from my grandfather.

During the miner's strikes, I would read the Sports Gazette using one of the Subbuteo floodlights.

Sounded at bit David Bryant, that. Apologies for crossing 1980s sports.

Subbuteo was the better game. It required skill and to some extent a bit of tactical nous. Plus you had a large selection of teams to buy and collect, could even build a Subbuteo stadium if you had room (y)

Boro circa 1975.

Subbuteo has actually made a bit of a comeback over the last few years, there's even an online solo league players can join and play in now.

I hope that keeper doesn’t have an Alice Band on. The posture made me go all 1997; no one wants that…

Remember the original subbuteo where the the players were 2d instead of 3d, also when you broke a man and glued him back to the base he was a little bit shorter than the others.

I loved Subbuteo, saved up all my paper round money just to buy a score board and some extras like St John’s Ambulance (with stretcher) and cameramen. Great for rainy days although we had plenty of days during the summer holidays when it came in handDont forget the police man and dog.

Subbuteo all the way and with the small ball ,,, could move your players around the pitch with a flick NOt a shove or drag .... and the keepers could move and save (not like Baratelli)
